NFL’s Biggest Blunder?

Now that Osama Bin Laden is dead, who is the most hated man in America? Another terrorist leader? A presidential candidate? The guy that made that terrible film that is creating such tension? Not even close. The most hated man in America is actually two men – two National League Football refs. That’s right. I went to sleep last night and left my husband downstairs watching the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks playing football. I am not really into football, but I couldn’t help but notice something odd had happened in last night’s game when I logged into … Continue reading

Teaching Your Kids to be Good Sports

Last night was our biggest football game of the year here in Utah. It’s something fans look forward to all year long. It is jokingly referred to as the “Holy War” around here; BYU vs. Utah. Fans banter back and forth about who is better constantly and believe it or not it can become quite heated. This used to be an exciting time at our house. The whole family would get together to watch the game. My entire family bleeds blue and always has (roots very strongly for BYU for those of you not familiar with the lingo). When my … Continue reading

Power Hog in Your House

I don’t pay our electric bill, so I don’t have to be horrified when I open the envelope. Electricity is deregulated in Texas and we pay some of the highest per kilowatt hour fees in the nation. Electric companies here are constantly advertising and vying for business by claiming they can save you the most money. I wonder how much money the companies could save their customers if they dropped the advertising. We do not have any choices for electricity where we live. Our only option is the co-op that services our area. I do believe we’re paying less for … Continue reading

How to Meet Your Favorite Hollywood Stars

Los Angeles is the place to be if you are starstruck fan looking to bump into your favorite celebs. Unfortunately, a summer trip to Hollywood doesn’t always yield random meetings with Tinseltown hotties. Sure, there’s always a chance you might cross paths with a star while shopping at The Grove or Whole Foods, but you might have better luck on Hollywood Boulevard where the wax versions of entertainment’s elite are now on display. Madame Tussauds newest wax museum just opened a location in Hollywood next to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and steps away from Oscar’s Kodak Theatre and the Hollywood Walk … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for May 26 – June 1

For most, last week was short because of the Memorial Day weekend. In case cookouts and pool parties kept you away from the Marriage Blog, use this handy Week in Review to catch yourself up on what Lyn, Heather, and I wrote about last week. Wednesday, May 28 Lyn wrote about the company that specializes in maternity wedding dresses. (Apparently it’s a growing trend and this company has found its niche. Wild!) Lyn wrote about a woman’s research of couples choosing not to have children which became known as the “childless by choice project”. (And which also spawned a book.) … Continue reading

Children Obey Your Parents

As someone who regularly deals with children and their families, I often hear the same complaints: “They don’t listen when I tell them to do something.” “I can’t get them to obey.” “I’m doing everything right–disciplining for disobedience, praising for the good–and still I see no progress.” My disclaimer here is that if you are having trouble with your child–these couple of blogs won’t fix your problems. But I recently went to a parenting seminar and I want to pass along some things that were shared that struck home with me. Ephesians 6:1 “Children obey your parents. . .” One … Continue reading

How A Writers’ Strike Could Affect Your Favorite TV Shows

For those of you who have better things to worry about… Talks between Hollywood writers and producers have stalled. Translation: Your favorite TV shows could be disappearing in the weeks to come if a settlement is not reached. According to leaders for the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA), a strike could happen as early as tomorrow if enough members decide NOT to work without a contract while a deal is being hammered out. WGA members’ contracts expired last night. Earlier in the day talks between the writers from your favorite television shows and show producers ended abruptly with both sides … Continue reading

Is Your Spouse Your Competitor or Companion?

Not very far from here is a couple that I see every day. Every evening they run past the house as they are out for their evening jog, often they are racing each other. I see them at the swimming pool and I listen to them compare everything from who makes more in a given week to who makes a better Chicken Marsala. (Don’t ask me, I’ve never tried it). They argue, wrangle or negotiate over everything. She spends more time with the kids so he cuts back his work hours to spend at least as much time as she … Continue reading

Your Biggest Fans

My husband is quite the super star in our home. While I’m with our kindergartener and three year old all day, feeding them and playing with them, it’s their daddy who gets flooded with adoration when coming home from work. At the sound of the garage door opening, the kids drop everything they are doing as if some super pop star has just arrived. It’s not just our boys who are excited to see him either. My husband’s arrival home means I have my best friend with me again to talk with and to help occupy the kids. We are … Continue reading

Build Your Own Book

I am one of Sherry’s biggest fans; I was not born with the crafty gene, as I like to call it. So I often need suggestions to help me out. Recently, my daughter and I started a new project recently that she wants to give to her Pre-K 4 teacher as a gift when her preschool class ends this May. We took the idea from her creative imaginings. We took several pieces of sturdy construction paper. She drew a cover sheet and a back sheet. Then carefully wrote down the name of her book: Cassidy loves Mrs. Kathey. Once she … Continue reading
