All About Jesus and Life

Recently at church our minister started off by telling of a Sunday school teacher who decided to try a different approach to open her lesson. She gave some clues and asked the class to guess the answer. Her first clue was, ‘I am grey and furry.’ The class looked at her blankly No-one raised their hand. ‘I have a large black nose.’ Still no answer. Puzzled the teacher scratched kept adding clues. ‘I live in gum trees.’ No child answered. ‘I eat eucalyptus leaves.’ Finally one child tentatively put up her hand and said, ‘I know the answer should be … Continue reading

Worldviews and Choices

Recently I saw this sign on the back of a car, ‘The problem with having an open mind is that people keep wanting to put things in it,’which seems to be a variation of a quote by Terry Pratchett. Thinking about this quote, what are you feeding your mind? Is it the values of the world from popular magazines and TV shows? Unfortunately this is a common problem for each of us and also for our young people. According to ‘A spectator’s guide to worldviews- ten ways of understanding life,’ a new book, published by Bluebootle books ‘we are influenced … Continue reading

Latest Homeschool Battle Takes Aim on Religion

In what appeared to be a case of a divorced family fighting over homeschooling, the judge has ordered the child into school because she held to strongly to her own religious beliefs. The judgment stated that the girl lacked “some youthful characteristics”, and “appeared to reflect her mother’s rigidity on questions of faith”. The child has been ordered to attend a public school where she “must begin to critically evaluate multiple systems of belief and behavior and cooperation in order to select, as a young adult, which of those systems will best suit her own needs.” (South Dakota Voice) Had … Continue reading

Is Anger a Sin?

Anger is an emotion many of us experience from time to time. But is anger a sin? It can be – depending on what we are angry about and what we do with that anger. But anger isn’t always a sin. It can’t be. After all we read many times that God gets angry Take a walk through any of the Old Testament books and you are likely to come up against God’s anger. Does Love Conquer All?

My husband and I are not huge movie goers but yesterday we took ourselves off to the movies to see ‘Enchanted.’ And we were! What a fun movie with lots of laughs. I suspect it was a Disney film doing a send up of Disney animated films. Given the G rating I expected there would be lots of children present and there were parents and children but also a number of adults like us in couples or on their own and teenage boys in front of us. Judging by the reaction from the audience, there was not a person there … Continue reading

Is Fear Holding You Back?

Fear can stop us doing those things we know we should do. On Australia Day, 31 people in the Shoalhaven area committed to becoming Australian citizens. One person only took a couple of months to make that decision. Another man admitted it took him 62 years to decide to become an Australian citizen. One could only assume it was a fear of committing himself and changing his allegiance. Maybe you are in a similar position, with regard to the Lord? You’re afraid of committing yourself. You’ve heard the gospel message. You’ve felt the tug of Jesus on your heart prompting … Continue reading

My Country

Today, January 26th as it is already in our part of the world under the Southern Cross, is Australia Day. Our branch of the Sing Australia choir sang at Australia Day celebrations at Sussex Inlet. One the whole Aussies are a laid-back bunch and not given to huge displays of patriotism unless it’s Davis Cup or some other sporting event, although across the road in our neighbor’s yard is an Australian flag which flies all year round. Others only take to sporting a flag on this special day. But this is Australia Day, more than just a public holiday, it … Continue reading

What Really Matters

Over the past few days we’ve looked at getting our priorities right and making sure our lives exhibit transformation, love, commitment, joy. But how practically can we change our lives to incorporate these important features in our lives, when each day is so busy and so crammed with activities? If we’re waiting for a day without any troubles before we implement a change, it will never happen because each day has troubles, Jesus said the forecast is trouble, trouble and more trouble, Matthew 6:34. So it’s not likely to get better. It’s a fact too, that each day only comes … Continue reading
