Parenting and the word ‘No’

In my last blog we looked at the responsibility of parents. Today we will see the difference between a person who is not used to hearing the word, ‘NO.’ and the one who has learned obedience. In Old Testament times a barren women was told she would have a child Judges 13:2-3. He was to be a ‘Nazirite to God from the womb,’ verse 5. As God said, the woman gave birth to a son who was named Samson, Judges 13:24. It’s not too far fetched to suggest that after thinking they would never have a son, and then being … Continue reading

Concerned and Consistent Christianity

‘To Love anyone is nothing less than to wish that person good,’ Thomas Aquinas said. Sometimes showing our love, requires us to correct or discipline as we may have to do with our children. Or we may have to admonish or to warn those we love, as I did in the letter I wrote to a friend. See my blog, what to do when a friend is in danger. In 1 Corinthians 4:14-21 Paul is faced with this problem of having to exercise tough love. Paul recognized that the Corinthian church had problems. The church was divided and worldly, I … Continue reading

Show Your Teen You Are a Good Listener

I am definitely not an expert at parenting. I still have three children living at home with several years left, so I don’t claim to know it all. But there are some things I have learned that I believe could be a huge benefit to other parents. Even in the advice that I pass along, it doesn’t necessarily mean I have it down pat. I might still be working on it myself, which is the case here. If I could wrap up in one sentence what I would want to say to any parent when it comes to communication with … Continue reading

Don’t be a Jonah

How often are you and I like Jonah? Jonah was not just a reluctant prophet he was a rebellious prophet. God gave him a message to go to Nineveh and tell them that because their wickedness judgment was coming, Jonah 1:1. It’s not the sort of message anyone would put their hand up to deliver, especially to their enemies. Jonah wanted no part of it. He fled to Tarshish. Sometimes we can be just like Jonah. God gives us a message to give to our family, our friends, workmates and neighbors and instead of passing on that message, we ignore … Continue reading

I’d Never Do That!

Have you ever watched people yelling at their kids or arguing with their spouse, in a public place and thought I’d never do that? Or seen someone react to a generous offer by brushing the person’s generosity aside with a curt ‘No, I’m okay,’ and think I’d never do that? Or hear someone pay a compliment to another and hear it brushed aside by the pious comment, ‘It’s the Lord doing it.’ Do you ever see Christians in the news for all the wrong reasons as mentioned in the blog I read this morning about ‘Christians behaving badly’ and think … Continue reading

Following A Psalm Pattern

For many people the Psalms are one of the favorite bible books because so many of them seem to capture so well our experiences and emotions. So, I’ve decided to leave the book of Mark for a time and look at some of the psalms. The first one I’ve chosen to look at is Psalm 103, a psalm written by David. David starts by praising God for who He is – for His holy name and for what He has done, verses 1-2. Do we come into the presence of our Holy God and praise Him for who He is … Continue reading
