Wisdom and Warnings from Proverbs

The book of Proverbs contains great wisdom. Here is one example. The passage is Proverbs 30:5-9. Over the next couple of days I intend to look at it verse by verse and see what truths can be gleaned from it.

Proverbs 30:5 tells us 'Every word of God is flawless.' Sometimes people will challenge us, claiming the bible is full of contradictions and errors. This statement is invariably made by those who don't know God's words or are repeating what they have heard someone else say. The truth is every part of God's Word will stand up to the closest scrutiny.

Years before people discovered the world was not flat but a sphere, God's word had declared it so, Isaiah 40:22. It also assures us when God makes a promise, He ensures it is fulfilled. That ought be a great encouragement and blessing to us. We may not always be able to depend on the words and promises of others but we can always depend on God's words.

Proverbs 30: 5, 'He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.' Sometimes people let us down, we cannot depend on them. We don't know where to turn. God will never let us down. He is always there to protect us.

When we look at the injustice and horrors of our world, we can be tempted to despair. But if God is our shield we can turn to Him and He will help us deal with whatever is happening, secure that one day He will make everything beautiful and perfect, Revelation 21:1-8. What a comfort for those who trust in Him.

Proverbs 30:6 warns, 'do not add to His words or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.' There are plenty of cults and sects who have added to God's Word. Some have been proved liars already. Others might think they have gotten away with it. In the end, they will find out differently. It is a warning to all of us not to add to God's Word.

Join me tomorrow as I look at the next few verses.
