Did Your Ancestors Live Through A Witch Hunt?

There are many kinds of people who add interest to any family tree in which they appear. Witches and persons accused of practicing witchcraft are one group of people who add an interesting twist to their families’ history. Witches are commonly associated with the Salem Witch Trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1690’s. Anti-witchcraft sentiments were not unique to Colonial America, though. In 15th century Europe, there were strict rules against practicing witchcraft and suspected witches were hanged. Thousands of witches were executed in Scotland and Germany as well. If there are people in your family tree … Continue reading

Patterns of Prayer

My reservations regarding the 5 finger prayer pattern are it doesn’t incorporate two aspects that I consider essential. They are praise and confession. So I’d like to suggest another pattern for prayer – an ACTION prayer. This is: Adoration Confession Thanksgiving Intercession Outpouring Needs Adoration The first, and what to me should always be our starting point, is praise or adoration of God. We should praise God for who He is and for His unique qualities. Take time to really dwell on the fact that you are in the presence of Almighty God. Adore Him. We have only to think … Continue reading

A Helpful Strategy for Prayer?

At school we teach the children prayer is simply talking to God and it is, so why do many of us find it hard? But we do. That’s why I think it is always helpful to have some strategies in place to help us. Have you tried praying over the activities of each day? I have found it a great help in organizing my time and priorities. I was excited to see someone else thought so as there was a link to it on this blog. Here is another prayer suggestion sent to me recently by a member of our … Continue reading

Praying Over Tasks For The Day

In a study my darling husband and I are working through together, called Proverbs and Parables – 16 studies on God’s wisdom for living by Dee Brestin, it suggested a special daily assignment. This was to ‘each morning prayerfully commit to the Lord your work for the day and let Him direct your thoughts. As he brings various activities to mind, list them on paper. Then let Him show you what you should do first, second etc.’ This is an application of Proverbs 16:3 which says ‘Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.’ This suggestion … Continue reading

Needs In Your Community And Beyond

Sometimes it may seem as we look around our community, we see so many areas of need. We could shrug our shoulders and decide ‘The problems are too big. I can’t do anything, so why bother trying?’ Imagine if God had taken that attitude with the world and the problem of sin! What a dreadful state we would be in. But God sent His Son to pay the price for, and deal with our sins, Isaiah 53:5-12 and John 3:16. Instead of admitting defeat, we could look at the skills, talent sand resources we have and see how they can … Continue reading

Why Pray For Your Community?

In a recent blog I suggested praying for the community where we live. Why should we pray for our communities? Because it is the place where God has put us and we are to be a witness or ambassador there just as Paul was in Corinth, 2 Corinthians 5:20. In Acts 22:15 , though these words were spoken by Ananias to Paul, I believe they ought also apply to us. We need to witness to what we have seen, heard, experienced and know of Jesus. Have you ever thought that you may be in the community where you are because … Continue reading

Why Am I Here? – Part 1

Have you ever had to live in a place where you would not choose to be? But you are there because of work, or family, circumstances, or perhaps because God directed you there. I’ve been in that position at varying times in my life. God showed some important truths during these times. I admit, I haven’t always been as receptive to learn them as I could have been. But here are some of the things I learned during these times. ‘From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the … Continue reading

The Effects on a Community

Firstly, sorry for the silence yesterday. I was too ill to lift my head off the pillow to join you all. In Lyn’s blog she detailed results of a survey on the effects of a happy, healthy marriage not just on the husband, wife and children, but on the community It set me wondering about this passage from 1 Samuel 8. The bible tells us nothing about Samuel’s wife and their marriage. Or about his sons until we come to the passage in 1 Samuel 8 when Samuel was old and appointed his sons judges over Israel, verse 1. Then … Continue reading

How Can You Know God’s Will for Your Life? Part 1

Is it possible to know God’s will? Do you want to know God’s will for your life? If so how could you go about it? Let me share my experience. Back in 1991 my husband and I were considering whether to sell our home in Sydney and move to Orange, a rural area of New South Wales, where his job was being relocated. During this time, I was working my way through Discovering God’s Will by Warren and Ruth Myers. The book stated that in major decisions and by following principles in God’s Word, specifically Romans 12:1-2, we can determine … Continue reading

One of the Best Things You Can Do

Another thing to talk about and one of the best things you can do for your marriage is study the bible together. As a start, I suggest getting a concordance and looking up husbands, wives and marriage and finding out what God has to say on these subjects. It will give you a clear picture of the way marriage should be. But don’t stop here. Make it a regular habit to study the bible and pray together. Meet with other married couples who are studying the same passages of scripture you are. It’s a great way of building enduring friendships, … Continue reading
