Your Beliefs and How They Can Make You Unhappy

Ever wondered just why you don’t seem to enjoy life as much as other people around you? Perhaps you think they have just got better lives than you and therefore suffer less stress and worries. While we each have differing degrees of stressors in our lives, it is not necessary to become a victim of every negative event that happens to you. One of the things that separates happy people from unhappy folk is their belief system about themselves and the world around them. Of course, there are times in our lives when so many difficult life events may converge … Continue reading

Month in Review: Adoption Blog, December 2007

I began the month with a book review that tied in to my November series on coping with discrimination and racism. The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate is based on an inspiring true story of how a town in Montana came together when Jewish and African-American families were terrorized. Then I ran Part One and Part Two Part Two of Is It Okay to Be Choosy? regarding the comments adopting parents often get that if they “really wanted to help”, they’d choose the most needy child or the one with the most special needs–and sometimes we lay this … Continue reading

Identifying Whose “Problem” it Is

I do not know about your child or children, but mine can get pretty good at manipulating situations and trying to make their problems and issues seem like they are actually mine. As a parent, it can help us to figure out how to respond to our children if we first identify whose “problem” it is—claiming our part and NOT claiming the stuff that actually belongs to our kids. My sister-in-law has a phrase that she uses with her kids when they are trying to make their issues her problem. She will say: “This sounds like a personal problem”—it is … Continue reading

Dreams Really Do Come True

I have to hand it to Jamie Foxx—-he’s come a long way in the past few years. In less than a decade the actor who was raised by his grandmother has moved from the standup stage to the Oscar stage. (See, dreams really do come true.) And now the Academy Award-winner has another prominent award to add to his collection—-a spot on Hollywood Boulevard. Foxx received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday and wasted no time thanking the woman he credits with shaping his life. “My grandmother’s gotta be spreading her wings and flying around in … Continue reading

Dr. Seuss Series: Happy Birthday to You!

This installment in the Dr. Seuss lineup was first published in 1959, and tells us all about the land of Katroo, where they really know how to wish someone a happy birthday. There’s a designated Birthday Honk-Honker, whose job it is to climb up to Mt. Zorn and blow the Birthday Horn. This heralds the triumphant entry of The Birthday Bird, a happy-looking fowl with a big smile on his face. He was trained by The Katroo Happy Birthday Association, and it’s his job to oversee your special day. The bird flies into your bedroom window and encourages you to … Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day, Foster Mothers

One of the greatest blessings of the Korean adoption system is the foster mothers. Infants and toddlers are taken care of in private homes by foster mothers. The majority of these foster mothers, though not all, are women whose own children are grown. They take usually one or sometimes two babies into their home for anywhere from two months to two years. They often carry the baby on their backs in the traditional Korean carrier quilt. The infant may sleep in the foster mother’s bed. If not, she sleeps on a mat on the floor in the foster mother’s room. … Continue reading

Week in Review: Fresh Starts to Who’s Happy

This week I touched on five topics: Fresh starts for your new year, finding moderation in your Christian walk, the execution of Saddam Husain, having faith in God, acknowledging Christians are not perfect and I also shared information gathered from a study regarding the happiest people in the United States. In Fresh Starts for 2007, I looked at the significance the Bible puts on the number seven. Seven seems to represent completion and makes way for fresh new starts. In Finding Moderation, I wanted to bring a point across that we can’t serve God too much, but we can get … Continue reading

Mistakes To Avoid When Starting Your Home Based Business

I just read an article about starting a home – based business that rubbed me completely the wrong way. Of course, it may be more about me than it is about the author of the article, because it was mostly a good article. It is simply written from a different perspective than the one that I come from. I take my home – based businesses just as seriously as anybody else, even though I work part time because of my primary career as a stay at home mom. The article that I read seemed like it was written for home … Continue reading

I Must Be Going Crazy

It’s been one of those weeks. You know the ones, you’re running from one thing to the next all day every day, you barely get a moment to sit down, and your mind is in a fog trying to remember all of the things that you forgot to do today. Today I confirmed to myself that I am officially going crazy. I’ve over extended myself to the point where I am losing my mind. As a single parent you naturally have a full work load each day. This job was meant for two and you’re doing it alone. That’s a … Continue reading
