Little Eyes Are Watching

When I was little, the television in our home was often on. My parents were very good about ensuring that it was not the focus of my attention for much of the day, and I spent plenty of time playing outdoors, reading, and doing other things that kids do. What I do remember is that the television in the kitchen was generally on at breakfast and at dinner, because my parents like to watch the news. I don’t really watch the news any more. It’s not that I don’t care about what is going on in the world, because I … Continue reading

Bat Watching

Oh, summer is almost here. At least last week it was. I could feel it in the clouds that didn’t sprinkle that much rain on our heads, and I could see it in the bats that fly over our heads at night. Yes, the bats are back. Our little bats hibernate over the winter. Come mosquito season, they emerge and start feasting. As someone who mosquitoes really love, I am thankful for the bats. Bat watching also makes a fabulous evening activity. Head to any pond or other area of still water where you might find a few mosquitoes, and … Continue reading

Watching Baby Sleep

Do you ever watch your baby sleep? I do. I’m sure most moms do. If you don’t, then you are missing out! I can’t help but have my heart melt when I look at his little cherub face asleep. I love watching his face expressions, and listening to him breathe. I especially love watching him suck in his sleep. When babies are sleeping, it seems as if all the problems go away. It is a time that you can sit there and enjoy your baby’s calmness (if you are not trying to get some sleep yourself). This past week has … Continue reading

Backyard Bee Watching

Things are certainly buzzing in the garden these days. Plants are popping out of the ground with vigor, and the bees…oh, the bees. There are so many of them, all wandering about the bushes, delighted that it’s finally a little sunny and that the flowers are out. Many of us are afraid of bees. While bees can sting, they don’t tend to do so, for the most part. Their cousins the wasps are a little more daring, and they’ve given the bee a bad name over the years. Honeybees will sting if threatened, but they do it at a high … Continue reading

Staying Active While Watching Television

I have a confession to make…I LOVE watching television. Not everyone will readily admit to such a thing, but I will. I love watching docudramas. I love watching shows that educate you about particular issues of interest. I love shows where dreams come true (“American Idol,” “X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent”). I love “Cake Boss” and Fox News. But I also love to curl up on the couch with a blanket and snuggle in for a good movie. Maybe you are a TV lover as well. It can easily become a good excuse to keep your bum on the couch … Continue reading

Doing Some Floor Exercises While Watching TV

One of my favorite things to do while I am watching TV is to do some toning exercises. Sometimes on a really packed and tiring day I only have a half hour to get in some exercise. While cardio would be my first option to spend that time, sometimes I am too exhausted. Instead of just sitting in front of the TV, I’ve come up with a small workout routine that focuses on toning. Before beginning a floor workout, it is a good idea to warm-up. I enjoy doing jumping jacks or jogging in place for five minutes. For stomach … Continue reading

Web Watching and Spider Science

After the wet and well, more wet summer we’ve had in these parts, it’s no wonder that the spiders think that it is fall. They’re busily spinning webs in my yard, my house, under the stairs, and across the plants in the garden. Spiders seem to sense the incoming fall and Halloween season and love to do their share of the decorating. Whether spiders give you the creepy crawlies or you’re in love with these useful mini beasts, they are fascinating creatures for children to watch. When you’re outdoors exploring in the late days of summer and early fall, take … Continue reading

Summer Science: Go Bat Watching

Mosquitoes can be the bane of summer evenings. Luckily, there are animals that love to eat them as an evening snack. Small bats such as the Little Brown Bat are voracious mosquito-eaters. They also love other small insects like moths. To go bat watching, you will need a small flashlight or headlamp. If possible, place red cellophane over the lamps and flashlights. It helps reduce the amount of light that the forest animals see, and this will make it easier to spot animals in the dark. The ideal time of year to go bat-watching is late summer, when the children … Continue reading

Watching the Royal Wedding

I have to admit, I was so annoyed with all the pre-wedding coverage prior to yesterday, but when the big day came, I set my DVR along with the rest of the world, and was sucked in by the wedding. I watched too many hours of coverage, and enjoyed every minute of it. Watching two people get married is always a beautiful thing. Add royalty to the mix and it becomes magical! I couldn’t help but think of my own wedding in the Salt Lake City temple. Mormon weddings are the opposite of royal weddings. We don’t walk down the … Continue reading

On Blogging and Real Life

Yesterday was a wonderful day. We celebrated winter solstice. After the darkest day of the year, the light starts to return to the northern hemisphere. We began with trimming the tree in the morning. It is an outdoor tree, so it comes indoors for less than a week, beginning on winter solstice. We moved on to decorating the back yard with food for the birds and watched chickadees move from seed-covered cone to seed-covered cone. In the evening, we went on a lantern walk through the forest at a church near the ocean. We threw stones in the ocean to … Continue reading
