Where Was That Scripture?

One of the most frustrating things for me is when I'm trying to recall a certain scripture from the Bible but I can't for the life of me find where it is! I thought this is what concordances supposed to be for, but if the Bible doesn't actually use the specific word for the subject, then the concordance isn't much help. So, for Christmas several years ago my brother bought me the Where to Find It in the Bible: The Ultimate A to Z by Ken Anderson, which includes over 3,700 contemporary topics. Finally, there's some hope.

In this book you can look up words like "abandoned" or "abortion" and find scripture references which might relate to those topics. I couldn't believe what all was in here. I even looked up the word, "television" and found it; granted, the Bible does not speak directly regarding television sets, it does have scriptural references which may be relevant to issues around watching television.

Another neat thing about this particular book is the cheesy comedic cartoon illustrations for some of the subjects. Some examples are:

  • Yielding to Temptation: This cartoon shows a car yielding at a traffic stop to a Good Humor ice cream truck (which has its ice cream truck melody playing).
  • Unexpected: Shows Moses with the burning bush quoting "Look at that!!! Now where's a camera when you need one?"
  • Sling Shot: Young David is swinging around his sling shot with a rock in the house by his mother who's knitting. She says to him, "David!! You take that outside young man! Someday you're going to hurt someone."
  • Myrrh: A man appearing to be one of the wise men passes by a large add for myrrh which states, "Be a wise man, buy her myrrh."
  • Con Man: Two men cross paths with a street merchant who opens his jacket (as one might do to show his knock-off Rolex collection) and shows them his sun dial collection asking, "How 'bout a nice sun dial for the missus?"

Anyway, I encourage you to pick this book up if you don't already have it. It's a great tool for finding things when a concordance isn't of much help.
