Where is Your Secret Place?

  • "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.'" (Psalm 91:1-2)

A "secret place" is somewhere you can commune with the Lord; you can seek Him and pour out your soul. It's a safe place where it's just you and God; where the cares of the world cease. Sometimes we can get too wrapped up in our day to day life and forget the need to connect, just us with God. The secret place is where we should become quiet and listen allowing the Lord to speak to our hearts. For me, it's a place where only the arms of God could reach to comfort me in my private times of hurting. I go to my secret place to meditate on the Bible and to listen as the Lord helps me to apply His word into my life. So where is your secret place?

  • "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

These were the words of Jesus who wants to meet with and help you. Going into the secret place with the Lord is a time to cast your cares on Him, confess your sins, and seek His word... It's not easy to become quiet but it's so necessary for us spiritually.

  • "Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me." (Psalm 131:2)

So, where do you go for such a retreat from the world? Everyone is different. Many people find a quiet area of the home where they can really devote themselves to God. I've thought of the "secret place" as being my heart; I take it with me wherever I go. I can talk to God without moving my lips; it's a place where I know He hears every secret thought I have. I can even close my eyes to block out distractions around me.

  • "How lovely is Your tabernacle, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." (Psalm 84:1-2)

The more time I spend with the Lord, the more I desire to be with Him. When reading Psalms I believe David must have felt like this too. He longed for the Lord. The more time I spend with the Lord in my secret place, the easier it is to retreat back to it in my time of need.
