Do You Dare to Compare?

Have you seen this tooth-achingly sweet note a 10-year-old boy penned to his hard working mom and attached to an even sweeter homemade gift? The photo has gone crazy viral since the boy’s sibling innocently posted it on Reddit. The youngster’s touching note reads: “Dear Mom, This is for you, I understand how hard you work, and I know you love strawberry milk, so I made this for you. :)” Sniff. Sniff. Right? I mean, c’mon moms, admit it; that tear in your eye, the tingle in your gut, your melted heart-—pure jealously. Okay, maybe, not 100% pure, but pretty … Continue reading

Forcing Yourself to Be Strong

I have a feeling that 2012 will prove to be one of the toughest and most challenging years for me as a parent. Between some serious issues with my daughter (which I will share when the time is right) and my firstborn leaving for the military, it feels like this mommy heart can’t take much more. It has been an emotional past few days as we learned early in the week that our son has his leave date set. He will be departing Tuesday, August 7th for basic training with the Air Force in Lackland, Texas (nearly 1,000 miles away … Continue reading

You are a PR person

Many businesses these days have PR or public relations people who are the visible face and voice of the business. They are the one who present a positive image to the world. They advertise it. But have you ever though that you are a PR person for your church firstly and for Jesus? I hadn’t thought if it quite like that until a friend recently said to me, ’You’d be a good PR person for your church. Oh hang on, I guess you already are.’ It’s true that those outside the church – our neighbors, friends, family and workmates are … Continue reading

Visiting Church

Visiting another church can be a fun and interesting time or it can turn into a nightmare. Last Sunday Mick and I were going to visit our son and his family in Sydney, so we wanted a church that was on the way. Our first step was finding one that was evangelical and at a convenient time. But it’s always a bit of a risk going to another church. Some churches are just not good at welcoming strangers. We know we‘ve encountered it before. Friendliness is something many people have commented on in regard to our church, so it’s something … Continue reading

Christianity Leaves No Room for Hate

God is love. He is not hate. So, it is amazing to me, how some individuals can justify their actions of hate in the name of Christianity. I recently read an article on CNN.com that you can find here where an extremist, radical “church” (and I use those quotations on purpose) are going to protest the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards for “issues related to her personal life”. Whatever that means. The article goes on to say how this church has protested at funerals before. They have protested at funerals of fallen soldiers claiming that these soldiers were punished by God. … Continue reading

How Can You Tell a Cult?

One of the big problems in today’s world as it was even back in New Testament times and the early church is false teachers. Sometimes alarm bells seem to go off while you are listening to someone teaching but you’re not quite sure why. How can you tell if what you are hearing is false teaching and if it is a cult instead of real Biblical Christianity? Thanks to Footprints magazine here are some pointers to look out for and others I have added. A cult will invariably have a charismatic leader. You know the type of person I mean, … Continue reading

October 2010 General Conference-Never Leave Him

It seems that everyday we are faced with the ability to look away from the things that are important. It is easier to sit down and watch our favorite TV show than to sit down and read our scriptures. It is easier to listen to the whisperings of the adversary than it is to listen to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. In the talk, Never Leave Him, by Neil L. Andersen Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles given at this past general conference, he talks about never leaving the Savior’s side, although at times it may seem tempting … Continue reading

Special Needs Children and Church

Taking children to church can be… an interesting experience. Between the fussiness and the random shout outs, parents of small children often have to try to calm down their children while suffering the evil eye from other church goers. For parents of children with special needs, church may not even be on their list of possible places to go. One reason church may be off limits to a family of a child with a special need is the lack of accessibility. Church pews weren’t exactly designed for wheelchairs or ease of access. But even if your church is accessible, the … Continue reading

Keeping Your Faith at College

Keeping your faith when you go off to college or university can be a real test for some young people. So what can you do to ensure that you don’t over commit and get caught up in the whirl of activities and neglect your spiritual life? Here are some suggestions based on the experience with our own children and those of friends’ children who have gone away to college or university. If you know any people who are already attending that college, get information from them about the types of groups that are available, If not the college will always … Continue reading
