Special Needs Blog Week in Review – April 8-14, 2012

The Special Needs Blog Week in Review is a great way to keep up with everything that has been posted on the blog in the past week. It gives you a brief description of each one, so you can quickly find something that you are interested in reading. What did you miss last week? The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on April 9, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of “Hold the Gluten” podcast, which is called “Help With Celiac Research”. The episode featured Dr. Daniel Leffler of Beth Israel Medical Center, who discusses a … Continue reading

The Trend Toward Co-Blogging and Blog Contributors

I first began blogging about two years ago. Up until that point I had not even read a blog. I began blogging to house my writing and share my thoughts. I never intended for blogging to become an important part of my life. I’m a wife with four kids and a business. That last thing I needed was another thing on my plate. However, soon blogging became a passion of mine. In my time on the blogosphere I noticed an interesting trend. Solo bloggers are starting to become group bloggers. The trend is not lost on me. I contribute to … Continue reading

Does More Pressure Need to Be Put on Students?

I got an email from a website, “Online Degrees,” in which you can find a really interesting article, “Pressure from parents: Do students need more of it?” It was interesting to read this after coming off parent/teacher conferences. I have one child that truly cares about their schoolwork and is doing well. I have another child who could take it or leave it. Then I have a child that really doesn’t seem to care. Three very diverse students. The article cites a study done by the “Pew Research Center,” in which 6 in 10 Americans believe that parents aren’t putting … Continue reading

Pressure Treatment

The Thundershirt from my last pet blog made me start to wonder about pressure as a treatment for dog anxiety. As I said, I’d never heard of the practice before, so I’m curious as to whether or not it’s a legitimate calming method or something made up by Thundershirt salespeople. After spending a while researching the topic, I’m more inclined to believe the latter. Multiple searches using varied forms of the phrase “pet anxiety pressure treatment” resulted in page after page only talking about the subject specifically in relation to selling the Thundershirt. I’m ready to consider the “pressure as … Continue reading

Ricky Martin Comes Out

Today, Ricky Martin announced what many had suspected for years – he is homosexual. Martin came into the spotlight as a teen when he joined Menudo, a boys band that replaced members when they turned 16, their voice changed, they grew facial hair, or grew too tall – whatever came first. Martin made a comeback in the early ‘90s with the hit “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” but even then, many question his sexuality, despite a 14 year on-again/off-again relationship with TV host Rebecca de Alba. He avoided the topic, choosing instead to talk about his music rather than his personal … Continue reading

SC Johnson Comes Clean

In a day and age when many people are wondering exactly what is in their cleaning products, SC Johnson has decided to come clean with their ingredients list. Last week, the company launched the website WhatsInsideSCJohnson. The website lists the 200+ ingredients found in the company’s products, including Drano, Shout, and Windex. You may be thinking “So, what’s the big deal?” Well, green activists are pleased because one of their major complaints is that companies such as SC Johnson don’t make full disclosure of the ingredients used. I guess this leads to suspicion by the activists that the some of … Continue reading

When Pressure Comes

Sometimes no matter what we do there will be those who will criticize, who will tell us we should be doing something else, we should be doing more, we should be involved in some program or that we’re just plain wrong. Even Paul experienced this sort of pressure. In Acts Paul had an idea of what he needed to do. He was hurrying to be in Jerusalem if possible on the day of Pentecost, Acts 20:16. He calls the elders of the church at Ephesus and reminds them of all he has taught them, verses 18-21 and informs them of … Continue reading

Pressured into Online Social Networking

My teens have finally persuaded me and I have given in to their prods and almost-encouraging words and am now officially learning how to “do” the online social networking. With my first Facebook page up and running I am floundering around like an oldster in the dark… I figured if my 80+ year-old grandmother can send me a steady supply of e-mails, I can get with it and learn how to do this fancy networking. My girls have been teasing me because it took me a month just to learn the name—I called it everything from “My Face” to “Space … Continue reading

Where is the Pressure Coming From?

Stress, pressure, tension—there are plenty of single parents who think these words have either become their middle names, or are at the very least a pretty regular reality in daily life. There is no denying that pressure and stress can be rampant in the lives of single parents, but where is the pressure coming from? Is it something that is coming onto us from the outside world, or are we doing it to ourselves? I don’t know about you but there are days when I have to remind myself to breathe the pressure can get so intense. I hit the … Continue reading

Desperation and Pressure

Desperation can be an all-to-common theme for many of us in our home businesses. The trouble with desperation is that it not only causes us all sorts of stress and worry, but it also puts us in a weaker place when it comes to negotiations and decision-making. When we get into a place of desperation in our businesses, we can really start to feel the pressure to fix things immediately and that might not be the healthiest for our businesses (or ourselves) long term. In order to understand how devastating desperation can be to our decision-making, think of how you … Continue reading
