Baby Names–How Many is Too Many?

Once upon a time parents gave their children a first, middle and last name and called it a day. These days kids are lucky if they get off with monikers that take less a day to pronounce. Case in point: the latest round of celebrity babies born to some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Last week acting duo Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell welcomed fraternal twin daughters into the world. The bitty babies were bestowed the following gigantic names: Dolly Rebecca Rose O’Connell and Charlie Tamara Tulip O’Connell. But, the O’Connell twins are not the only Tinseltown tots embracing the four-name … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Naming of Cats

The first musical I ever saw on Broadway was Cats — I used to listen to the soundtrack (on vinyl) over and over. There’s a song about the naming of cats that I still can remember the lyrics for: The naming of cats is a difficult matter It isn’t just one of those holiday games… You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter When I tell you a cat must have three different names. The song goes on to say WHY a cat has three different names, including the secret name that they only tell to other … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Cool New Toys For Kids and Cool New Names For Babies

NEW TOYS I was beginning to feel the TV show “Lost” was some how getting lost in ABC’s primetime line-up. But it’s summer and the network is experimenting with some seasonal programs so all is not “lost” yet. According to network execs, new episodes of the show will begin airing in the fall. Until then fans of the hit show will have to make do with a new set of “Lost” action figures. Four more character replicas recently joined the first group that came out last year. Just released to stores are Sawyer (played by Josh Holloway), Jin (Daniel Dae … Continue reading

Baby ESPN

At first I thought it was a joke. Then, I figured that someone lost a bet. Or, perhaps, they simply lost their mind. Later, I discovered all of my assumptions were wrong. What I thought was rumor was in fact truth: a baby boy born to an avid sports fan in Biloxi, Mississippi a few days ago was given the name: ESPN. That’s right, ESPN, as in the sports network. According to a local newspaper, Leann Real promised her husband—a self-professed sports fanatic–that if they ever had a son he’d get to pick the name. Hence, the name: ESPN Montana … Continue reading

Changing Your Child’s Name

A common question I hear among families that are adopting an older child is; should they change their child’s name? I believe there is a degree of claiming that happens upon naming your child, therefore there are some benefits. Some children who have been adopted feel like their entire original identity has been removed from them when their name is changed. So it’s important to consider the big picture when making such a decision. Our first son came to us at 13 mo. For his safety, his name needed to be changed. We slowly changed his name, first by calling … Continue reading
