How to Be a Hero Mom on a Budget

Sometimes I don’t feel like a hero mom. Such as yesterday. It was very late, and my tween and I were in the grocery section of Target looking to pick up just a couple of food items to help us make it through a long week, since we missed our scheduled food shopping.  As we passed the frozen case on our way to hunt down cheese, my child asked me if we could get ice cream. Apparently he and his siblings already went through the one gallon container, the one quart container, and the box of ice cream sandwiches that … Continue reading

Hero Pilot Gets Unbelievable Job Offer

Warning to U.S. Airways passengers: The price of a seat might be taking off. It’ll have to if the company wants to keep their hero pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. No kidding. U.S. Airways better dig deep if it wants to compete with the new offers that have been flying Sullenberger’s way. The latest job offer comes courtesy of bazillionaire Richard Branson, who wants the “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot to fly for his company—-Virgin Air. Branson said was in “utter shock” upon hearing the news that Sullenberger saved 155 lives when he successfully splash-landed a U.S. Airways jet in … Continue reading

What Price a Hero?

I’m feeling stunned. I’ve just come back from watching The Dark Knight. Like a lot of people I couldn’t help but be affected by Heath Ledger as the Joker and couldn’t help but wonder whether playing a part like that every day would somehow affect the psyche of the person playing the part. Is it as easy as that for an actor to switch off? What do others think? As we left one of the part owners of our local movie theatre commented, ‘Even when he’s not on screen, you’re waiting all the time for the Joker to come on.’ … Continue reading

Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit

Ready to be a star? GameStop has just released the latest information on the upcoming video game Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit. The bundle for this bit of phenomena of a rock simulator (think Van Halen not mineral) is scheduled to be released tomorrow, on May 27th. For the bundle price of $189.99, you’ll get the game itself plus the whole band kit. The band kit consists of a drum kit, a new guitar (that is said to be vastly improved from the old) and a microphone. You can also just purchase the guitar kit that includes the game … Continue reading

Disney Good News/Bad News: New Prices and A New Princess

Let’s start with the bad news first: You’ll have to dig a bit deeper into your pockets if you want to hang out with Mickey and Minnie in Florida. Last weekend, Walt Disney World hiked the cost of a one-day adult pass to its four Orlando theme parks by 6%, to a record breaking $71. This is not good news for those of you who patronize Disney’s rivals Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando either. While those parks haven’t raised their prices yet, in the past they have quickly matched Disney’s increases. Now for the good news: Help is on the … Continue reading

Hug-A-Hero Doll

Could it be the next hot, hot toy? Could it be destined for the annals of popular culture? I’m no Merlin, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the “Hug-A-Hero” doll experience a surge in popularity in the coming months. If you have a loved one in the military you may have heard of these unique dolls. After all, they were the brainchild of a military wife who had three children at home missing their father who was deployed a half a world away. Tricia Dyal says desperate times called for desperate measures. Two weeks after her husband was sent … Continue reading

Tom Cruise—”Hero” To Some 9/11 Emergency Workers

In a previous blog I wrote about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ new Louisiana home. It seems the couple is taking a detour getting there—-for good reason. According to news reports, Cruise is in Manhattan tonight raising money for New York police, firefighters and paramedics affected by the events of September 11th. His appearance (Holmes was also supposed to attend) was not billed as a surprise since the charity he is trying to raise money for—-the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project—-is a program he co-founded in 2002. It’s no surprise (at least to those who know Cruise) that the … Continue reading

Super Heroes

I decided to take my oldest son out the other day for a mommy and son dinner and shopping date. My son is 5 years old going on 15 by the way. I thought it a good opportunity while we were in the car listening to his latest favorite song, “Love is a Verb” by DC Talk, to share with him how awesome God is. With great emphasis, I decided to ask my son, “Did you know that Jesus is so awesome and powerful—more powerful than all the super heroes out there?!” My son responded matter-of-factly as if I was … Continue reading

Boston Bombings and a New Reason to Stockpile Frugally

The Boston bombings have taught us many things. Some we already knew, such as the resilience of the human spirit, how easily ordinary people become heroes, and the strength of a community all working together. It also has taught us some other, more practical lessons, such as to always be aware in crowds, to report suspicious activity, and to be prepared for the unthinkable. One of the many photos of that time that sticks in my head from the Boston bombings is the image of a police officer delivering two gallons of milk to a young family who couldn’t leave … Continue reading

Baby Center’s 15 Best Baby Products of 2012

If you are in the process of planning your baby registry, you may want to take note that BabyCenter has released its list of the top fifteen baby products of 2012, as chosen by moms. Who better to offer real life feedback on what works (and doesn’t work) for babies and their parents, and, perhaps more importantly, why. Since parenting is such an individual thing, it only makes sense that there are many products out there to address the needs of different parents with different lifestyles. Of course, it makes it a little harder to pinpoint which products will work … Continue reading
