Why I Have A Doula

We’ve written a little bit before about doulas on the site, but we’ve never been able to share personal experiences with one until now.  Back when I first found out I was pregnant, I wanted a midwife but couldn’t find one.  I thought at least I might be able to find a doula, because that would be better than nothing.  I wanted someone, other than my at-times too logical husband, who would definitely be all on my side during labor. It took me a while, and I actually ended up finding a midwife first, but I was able to find … Continue reading

Why Faith Makes All the Difference to Your Teen

Faith or religion may not be anything you talk about in your home or with your teenagers, but that doesn’t mean they don’t think about it. Teenagers are in the midst of asking important life questions, such as “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” These are spiritual quests, regardless of whether they’re thought of in a traditional religious sense. I believe that every person, whether self-identified as religious or not, has these spiritual thoughts. It’s why my counseling philosophy is called ‘whole-person’ – emotional, relational, physical, and spiritual. When you treat the whole person and address each of … Continue reading

Get To Know A Prophet

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all sit down with a prophet or an apostle and get to know them one on one? I would love that opportunity! Although, it would probably be a little scary at first, I can bet that they are all loving, personable men that would instantly make us feel at ease. While we may not all have that chance, I did run across a new portion of the church website that they are in the process of creating where you can read a short bio about each member of the first presidency and apostles. … Continue reading

Written in the Stars?

Are you and your spouse compatible? I’m not talking about your personalities; I’m talking about your horoscopes. According to the Chinese Zodiac, your birth year will determine your compatibility with your spouse. Click here to find all the information you need to determine your sign and that of all your loved ones. I was born in 1976, which is the year of the dragon. Under the dragon heading, it says that I am compatible with a monkey or a rat, but not with an ox or a goat. Guess what year my husband was born? 1960. And that makes him … Continue reading

Rough Ride: The Roller Coaster of Adolescence

Few things strike fear into the heart of parents more than the approaching adolescence of their children. They’ve heard horror stories from family and friends, and they dread the fear of the unknown and how it’s going to go with their own kids. Will that happy-go-lucky child turn into some sort of a sullen monster? Will the childhood skirmishes of yesterday turn into open warfare? Will the days of having their friends over all the time turn into years of going out to be with friends somewhere else? Most of us can remember feeling awkward, unattractive, anxious, and overwhelmed as … Continue reading

Job Titles From the Days of Your Ancestors

What did your ancestors do for a living? Times have probably changed quite a bit between now and and when your ancestors were alive. There are job titles that exist today that were never even dreamed of several generations ago. Conversely, there are some jobs that have ceased to exist. Genealogists spend a great deal of time digging into the past. This means there is a good chance that you will come across a word or two that you are unfamiliar with. Some of these words relate directly to the types of occupations that your ancestors held. If you cannot … Continue reading

Mothers and Daughters

I recently found out that my third, and probably my last child is going to be another boy. I’m thrilled for another little man in my life. My boy has been such a fun boy so far, and I can’t wait to see what both boys will be like together! But, a tiny part of me hoped for another little girl. Mostly because I think this will be my last child (at least that is what I keep saying to everyone) and I had such an angelic little girl before the boys ever came into my life. My daughter is … Continue reading

Watch Your Words

Whether we like it or not, our words define us. They reveal out thoughts and heart attitudes. Jesus knew this. See Matthew 12:34-37 and Mark 7:15-23.You know it too. Listen to someone you know talk. It is easy to pick up clues about the type of person they are from the words they say and the tone of voice in which it is said. Impatience stubbornness, anger, impatience, jealousy will all show up in a person’s words or tone. So will love, gentleness, generosity, patience. Before you jump in and add your thoughts to a conversation, can I suggest you … Continue reading
