Easter Egg Envy

To quote The Beatles: “I long for yesterday.” Back then you didn’t have to have a degree in mixology and interior design to decorate Easter eggs. All you needed were a few bowls, some hard-boiled eggs, a handful of dissolving dye tablets and a wire dunker. Every year it was PAAS or bust. Parents of my generation know that PAAS is the Kleenex of Easter egg decorating kits. So, why mess with success? Today, moms and dads are bombarded with crazy egg decorating sets that require mad scientist skills to jazz-up hard-boiled ovum in time for Easter. Long gone are … Continue reading

Preventing Easter Messes

Do you find Easter eggs throughout the house long after Easter? I used to dread the years it was too cold or raining or snowing because that meant hiding eggs in the house. I was always sure I would remember where I hid them but, without fail, I would find eggs when I was cleaning. If you’ve never had a really old hard boiled egg crack, you are one of the lucky ones. It’s not a smell you soon forget, and since it’s usually summer when you find it, airing out the house is pointless. To escape this time bomb … Continue reading

Green Easter

It’s almost Easter and as always, when holidays are near, my mind turns to celebrating them in a green way. First, you can make your own Easter basket, but you may not be that crafty. I would love to be able to make a cute cloth basket, but I cannot sew, so I just have to settle for purchasing one at the store. You can get a simple basket then allows the kids to decorate it with eco-friendly items such as fresh flowers, bows made from scraps of fabric, and felt eggs and bunnies. If you want to be really … Continue reading

Egg-nomenal Easter Fun

Do you remember Richie Rich? The world’s wealthiest kid was my brother’s favorite comic book character. I didn’t enjoy reading about him as much as my oldest sibling, but what I do remember was that on Easter all of the rich kid’s eggs were monogrammed with “RR” and dollar signs. While the rest of his pals got traditional dyed eggs on Easter, blondie got fancy golden “RR” eggs which I thought were totally cool. Fast forward a couple of decades and this year I am planning to place my daughter’s initials on Easter eggs to make them appear more personalized. … Continue reading

Easter Freedom

My daughter and I have always been exceptionally close. I chock it up to the hours and hours she spent attached to my breast while she was an infant. And by hours I mean days. Actually, months. Okay, years. The kid nursed for the first two-and-a-half years of her life. My bosom buddy is six now and breastfeeding has been replaced with quality time doing other things together, such as reading, playing tennis, taking hikes and playing with Barbie’s urinating pups. Whereas my daughter is in full-day school this year, I still pepper our playtime with little lessons, including stranger … Continue reading

The Osterbaum – A German Easter Tradition

Does your family have a brightly colored Osterbaum this Easter? Perhaps you have noticed that some of the people in your neighborhood have decorated a tree in their front yard with dozens of plastic eggs. If you do not have German heritage, then this particular Easter tradition may be a bit confusing for you. I imagine these Easter Trees would be really confusing to someone whose family does not celebrate Easter. The word “Osterbaum” is German, and it translates to “Easter Tree” in English. If you are of German heritage, or if you took a German class when you were … Continue reading

Easy Easter Scrapping

When in doubt, buy, buy, buy. That’s my theory when it comes to last-minute scrapbooking. With Easter just a few days away my plan to create a holiday scrapbook for my mom is in serious jeopardy. Here’s where I’m at: I was going to pen my own Easter poem and pair it with photos of my daughter and my mom during their last Easter together. I figured I could whip something up by looking at the photos for inspiration. Now I plan to buy a buy a poetry book and lift something from it. I was going to make my … Continue reading

Getting More Out of Easter Sunday

It is easy to think of the easter bunny, and candy on Easter Sunday. We might rush around to make sure our kids’ easter baskets are filled, that we’ve dyed the easter eggs, and that we’ve hidden them quietly for our children to find the next morning. But, do we put the same amount of effort into discussing with them why we are doing all of this in the first place? Is Easter really about the Easter bunny? Of course, we know it’s not. I was looking on the church website today and found some very inspirational videos that will … Continue reading

When Your Kid Wants to Bring the Easter Bunny Home

There was a time when my young daughter wanted nothing to do with the Easter Bunny… at least the one at the mall. Time has apparently erased the bad feelings she had for the candy-toting rabbit because now all she talks about is how she wants the Easter Bunny to bring her a real rabbit to care for, instead of the chocolate kind. Greeeeeeeeeeeeat! How did bunnies and baby chicks become the poster animals for Easter anyway? What’s more, do parents really present live bunnies and chicks to their kids on Easter Sunday? I’m no farmer, and I highly doubt … Continue reading
