Holiness vs. Legalism: Drawing the Line? Part 2

This is the second part of a 3 part series. In part 1 I shared my thoughts on the way we dress as Christians and the music we listen to in the name of Christ. As stated in my last blog, I have a difficult time drawing the line between striving toward holiness and getting caught up in legalism. If you recall in the Bible, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees who were hypocrites (Matthew 23). They were focused on being self-righteous and following the Law losing sight of the purpose God had for initially establishing those laws. Needless to say, the … Continue reading

Peer Pressure

When we think of peer pressure, school aged children likely come to mind. Peer pressure doesn’t just affect those in school; adults can be affected as well. Society generally has an impact on us whether it’s how we choose to dress, how we choose to speak or how we choose to behave. Christians are no less susceptible to various pressures of temptation from the world than anyone else. Peer pressure is not exclusive to those who we directly associate with either; it can come from people on television and the internet as well. It’s important as Christians that we are … Continue reading

Cursing

Likely we’ve all done it or heard it; during the intensity of a moment one curses as if letting pressure out of a volcano. Some have even adopted curse words into their regular vocabulary out of habit. Swearing, cursing, cussing, bad words, they’re almost everywhere from the door of the home, to television, to bumper stickers. A person’s sensitivity to certain words probably has a lot to do with their environment. I have never heard a bad word come out of my mom’s mouth (my dad was a different story). Saying the Lord’s name in vain while growing up was … Continue reading

5 Steps For Starting a Children’s Park Ministry

Are you looking for a way to reach children in your community this summer? Does your church have limited financial resources? Starting a park ministry is a great way to reach children in your area with the gospel that is also relatively inexpensive. This is also a ministry that your whole family can do together. Here are five tips to help you begin reaching children in your area: 1. Locate a park in your community that has apartment buildings nearby (preferably within walking distance). Parks located near residential developments and trailer parks are also ideal. 2. Canvas the area. Develop … Continue reading

Cleaning House

Digging in, purging, washing, dusting, refinishing, reorganizing, and airing out the house… It’s all a part of spring cleaning. When we don’t clean house, it becomes dirty, dusty, worn, disorganized, and the air becomes stagnant; all these things are unhealthy for us to live in. These same things are true of our spiritual life as well. When we turned our lives over to Christ, our bodies become temples for the Holy Spirit to dwell in. “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and … Continue reading

Deciding Right From Wrong

This is part 3 in the Values that Last series where I’ll be touching on discerning right from wrong. My first blog was on choosing my standard and my second one was on why my beliefs matter. Each one of us has a basis for determining what is right from what is wrong in our lives. Just because something feels right, doesn’t mean that it is. As a Christian, my authority is God, and His guide book for my life is the Bible. As I look at 8 common pleasures in society, I can see potential for destruction: Eating: Like … Continue reading

What Does the Bible Teach us About Good Company? Part 1

The following are some points that I’m sharing based on Biblical scripture about keeping good company (I’ve referenced to chapter and verse after each point for personal study): If someone wants to teach you anything different than Christ has taught us, don’t invite him in your home, don’t encourage him, or you will be taking part in his wickedness. (2 John10) Don’t engage with those who are doing evil or testify on their behalf in a dispute perverting justice. (Exodus 23:2) When we follow the ways that good men do, we are keeping on the path of righteousness. (Proverbs 2:20) … Continue reading

What Does the Bible teach us about Good Company? Part 2

In part one I shared some inspirational points from the Bible on choosing good company. I’m going to continue here with some additional points I have included scripture references for the actual verses: Those who are fearful of a person will find themselves trapped but when we turn to the Lord we can find safety. (Proverbs 29:25) Don’t spend time with anyone who calls themselves a Christian but indulges with sexual sins, is greedy, cheats, is into idolatry, a drunk, or abusive. (1 Corinthians 5:11) We’ll know other Christians by the right things they are doing and the ones who … Continue reading

Why I Homeschool: An Answer for Kaye

Well, Kaye asked why, so I’m going to answer her! If you have not read Kaye’s blog you may want to before reading mine; this is a direct response to her earlier post. Let me say also, before I begin, that we have agreed to discuss publicly our views via our blogs. We are interested in good discussion, but not in a mudslinging brawl. It is neither her or my intention to bait and we don’t want to encourage anyone else to either. Differences of opinion make for good discussion and good fodder for thought and understanding. In conclusion to … Continue reading
