Learning Marriage from Your Parents

I was raised with somewhat progressive views on marriage.  It feels strange to even be typing that, and it’s certainly nothing I ever thought growing up.  I know that on the overall spectrum of views on marriage, the ideals with which I was raised would only be in the middle, and probably closer to the conservative side of the middle.  But it’s still so surprising to me how many people aren’t even that far. I’ve already shared my story about my college roommate.   The reason she and her boyfriend didn’t talk for years about division of labor in the household, … Continue reading

Values to Hold Onto

As a single parent it is so important to have something to hold onto in your time of need. While I realize not everyone is religious, we all have certain values that we want to instill in our children. When Logan was born I felt a lot of tension within me. I knew how I wanted to raise him and the values I would like in our home, but my husband at the time had a very different set of values, as did the rest of his family. How was I going to be able to teach my son the … Continue reading

Cleaning Tools You May Not Have Thought Of

Having the right supplies can make all the difference when it comes to cleaning your home. While most of us know about cleaning products that are available, there are some cleaning tools that you may not have thought of. These can make cleaning your home easier. For instance, when it comes to cleaning windows I would guess that most of us use glass cleaner. Spray a little on and wipe away with newspaper or towels (paper or linen). But a squeegee can do a much better job. It also comes in handy when washing your car. Another idea is to … Continue reading

Are Your Chirstmas Lights Still Up?

Yesterday when the sun was shining and I was playing in the yard I started making a list of all the things I need to do outside. One thing I forgot to put on that list was take the Christmas lights down. It’s a mix of rain and snow today so I don’t think it will get done today. It did make me start to wonder why I needed to take them down. Here in Utah we usually get our first snow in October and since I have to get on the roof to put the lights up, they have … Continue reading

Helping Others Understand Your High Needs Baby

I hold my baby a lot. This is because I have a fussy, high needs baby that needs to be held a lot. I have found though that in doing so, I have many people see my baby as an easy, breezy baby. For example, I have lots of strangers tell me how good of a baby he is. What they don’t realize is that he IS a good baby in my arms. He IS a good baby when someone is walking, bouncing, or rocking him. Just today in the store, a woman was cooing over my smiley baby remarking … Continue reading

When Your Cat Is A Food Thief

My cat Chrestomanci’s gluttony has continued to the point that it warrants another post. When I was trying to find ideas for how to address his overeating problems I scoured the internet for suggestions, but I didn’t find much advice. Thus I wanted to share my own experiences to help others in a similar situation. After observing the cats’ gluttony during the holidays, Jon and I performed an experiment. We’ve long suspected that Chrestomanci was eating some of Cole’s food. Usually we keep their bowls in the laundry room, which they can access via a cat door, so their food … Continue reading

Why Your Family Members Steal Ketchup Packets

Genealogists might notice that there are certain habits that seem to run in your family. Some of these things are learned, and some seem to have a genetic basis. Have you noticed that some of your relatives have a tendency to steal ketchup packets, or sugar packets, from restaurants? There could be several reasons why they do that. When you go to a restaurant with your family, you will notice that the restaurant has put out certain things that you can use without being charged for them. Often, this includes things like the little packets of sugar, (or sugar alternatives), … Continue reading
