Mother’s Day is Meaningless

Do I really mean that Mother’s Day is meaningless? Yes I do, under certain circumstances. It is meaningless to make a fuss over your mother and celebrate Mother’s Day with a special lunch or dinner and gift of you don’t show her the rest of the year that she is important to you. If you treat her as someone who is there to pick up after you and look after your needs but never stop to think about her and how she is feeling then, why be a hypocrite and celebrate Mother’s Day? The same could be said about husbands … Continue reading

Mothers Day, a Celebration or a Trial?

Mothers Day can be lovely or it can be a time of pain. For those with good relationships, it’s a chance to get together and celebrate. For those estranged from family or whose mother has died or they live a distance away, it can be a time of misery and loneliness. Yesterday, Mothers Day here, for me was a lovely family day. Our daughter and her husband were unable to come down to us. That’s the way it is when your daughter is married to someone in ministry and Mothers Day falls on a Sunday. Sunday for them is a … Continue reading

What is the Big Deal about Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. The shops have stacks of cards and heart shaped decorations out. Yet in a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald the marketing director of Hallmark, Amanda Del Prete, said, ‘We have had some women say if they want to get an anniversary card from their husband, they have to buy it themselves and give it to them. I think a few people have slipped their husbands some Valentine’s cards as well.’ Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? If he can’t be bothered or forgets or isn’t interested in buying a card, then what’s the point? … Continue reading

What Annoys Me About Mother’s Day

What annoys me about Mother’s Day is, first and foremost, the way it has been taken over by commercialism. TVs and catalogues run ads like ‘buy Mom a diamond ring or pendant, a washing machine,’ etc – the assumption being that the more money is spent on the gift, the more we value Mom. Rubbish! Two of my most treasured gifts are 3 paperbacks and a hand made bracelet. My son made the bracelet of red, white and green clay around thirty years ago. Like his mother he’s not the most adept person when it comes to crafts, so anything … Continue reading

The Wrong Excuse for a Gift?

It’s Father’s Day in Australia tomorrow. Someone asked me what I’d bought for Mick for Father’s Day. ‘Nothing,’ I replied. ‘He’s not my father.’ If my father was still alive I would certainly buy him a gift and our son and daughter buy a gift for Mick, but we have never held to the view that the husband buys presents for their wife on Mother’s Day or the wife buys presents for the husband on Father’s Day. After all it’s not husband’s or wive’s day. In fact I think the whole thing is quite absurd and a ploy by companies … Continue reading

Knowing What’s Needed

When buying gifts for friends and family, do you tailor your gifts according to the person they are intended for? In an earlier blog I mentioned a special gift given me for mother’s day. This time I’d like to tell you about the gifts given me my by son, his wife and family. They were: the CD ‘Awake’ by Josh Groban. I’m a big fan of this young man with the beautiful voice. A DVD- ‘The Sea Hawk’ with Errol Flynn. Errol Flynn was always a favorite from when I was a child, even though his best films were made … Continue reading
