Do I really mean that Mother’s Day is meaningless? Yes I do, under certain circumstances. It is meaningless to make a fuss over your mother and celebrate Mother’s Day with a special lunch or dinner and gift of you don’t show her the rest of the year that she is important to you. Mothers Day can be lovely or it can be a time of pain. For those with good relationships, it’s a chance to get together and celebrate. What is the Big Deal about Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. The shops have stacks of cards and heart shaped decorations out. Yet in a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald the marketing director of Hallmark, Amanda Del Prete, said, ‘We have had some women say if they want to get an anniversary card from their husband, they have to buy it themselves and give it to them. What annoys me about Mother’s Day is, first and foremost, the way it has been taken over by commercialism. TVs and catalogues run ads like ‘buy Mom a diamond ring or pendant, a washing machine,’ etc – the assumption being that the more money is spent on the gift, the more we value Mom. Rubbish! The Wrong Excuse for a Gift?

It’s Father’s Day in Australia tomorrow. Someone asked me what I’d bought for Mick for Father’s Day. ‘Nothing,’ I replied. ‘He’s not my father.’ If my father was still alive I would certainly buy him a gift and our son and daughter buy a gift for Mick, but we have never held to the view that the husband buys presents for their wife on Mother’s Day or the wife buys presents for the husband on Father’s Day.
