The 2012 Toys R Us “Differently-Abled” Toy Guide is Ready!

Many toys come with a label that states the recommended age. Parents of kids who have special needs learn that their child’s chronological age, and developmental age, might not match to what a toy maker recommends. Toys R Us has a guide to make it easier for your family to select appropriate toys for your child. The Toys R Us “Differently-Abled” guide is updated every year. It is designed to be a resource for parents, relatives, friends, and professionals who want to find a suitable toy for a child who has a special need. Wedding Rings and Gender Roles, Pt. 2

Last time I examined the discussion over whether or not men should have to wear wedding rings. Just about all of the arguments either for or against skipped one relevant consideration: whether or not women should have to or even enjoy wearing them. Only one article I found briefly acknowledged the idea: the author said that neither of her parents has worn a wedding ring for decades, for a variety of reasons. That’s all we’ve got: in the wedding rings debate we have in-depth considerations of male class traditions, shifting perspectives of masculinity, and a man’s role in a marriage, … Continue reading

Doing The Best We Can

Today has been one of those days. What am I saying, it’s been one of those weeks. Those weeks when you would give anything to have someone else take some of the burden, someone else who could find the right thing to say, someone else to know exactly how you are feeling. That’s not going to happen. I’m a single mother, this is my life, no one else’s and as much as other people love my daughter and I, when you get right down to it, it’s just the two of us. Just my daughter, making decisions, changing her mind, turning … Continue reading

Wells Fargo has Concussion Coverage

Wells Fargo Insurance Services has created insurance packages that manage and identify concussions in youth athletes. It is the first of this type of insurance to exist. I am guessing that the recent news reports about young football players receiving concussions might have influenced the creation of this new policy. It isn’t unheard of for a child to accidentally fall, and end up receiving a concussion. When this happens to small children, parents tend to take it very seriously. What happens next might be a trip to the emergency room, or a phone call to a pediatrician. Things may go … Continue reading

The Way We Handle Our Emotions

If you haven’t learned this already, you will…the way men and women handle their emotions is very different. But knowing this and learning how to accept it are two different things. Of course, it doesn’t always have to do with the fact that men and women are different. Personalities and characteristics come into play as well. For instance, my husband is very laidback. It takes a lot to rattle his cage. In fact, this week we dealt with a behavior issue with one of our children that almost set me off into a fit. But as my husband witnessed the … Continue reading

Take Back Your Power

I’m so grateful that the stigma of being a single mother is gone. Wouldn’t it be terrible to be a single mother in the 30’s or 40’s? Even if you were single through death instead of divorce, at that time you would have been an anomaly, your children would have been viewed differently, there wouldn’t have been anyone who understands what you’re going through. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, there are many single mothers today and we have a wealth of resources available to. It is much easier to be a single mother today than … Continue reading

Are You Afraid of Wealth?

Yes, it’s true—some people hold themselves back from attaining wealth because they are afraid of it. I’ve heard people say that they worry about becoming a different person, that they don’t want people making friends with them in hopes of getting favors, that they don’t want to be targeted by gold diggers, and, the most common of all, they fear that being wealthy is somehow unrighteous. It is true that we tend to view others differently when we know how much money they make. That’s kind of natural in our society. Many people choose to keep their actual earnings to … Continue reading

Female Dogs Might Think Differently from Male Dogs

Maybe I’ll learn by osmosis A recent article on MSNBC posited that perhaps female dogs are more intelligent than male dogs. Or at least, that’s what the sensationalist headline might lead readers to think. What’s really going on is that a study from the University of Vienna may have found evidence that male and female dogs think in slightly different ways. The study, led by cognitive biologist Corsin Muller, tested domesticated dogs for their comprehension of “object permanence.” Object permanence is a physical law stating that when an object disappears from view, that doesn’t mean that it’s ceased to exist … Continue reading
