Seven Songs You Won’t Find in the Hymnal

Every Sunday, we pick up the hymnal and sing a variety of songs meant to encourage the Holy Spirit to join us in our worship. We also use these beautiful songs in our family home evenings, and listen to them throughout the day. The Lord has told us that “the song of the righteous is a prayer unto (Him),” and we try to utilize these wonderful expressions. But there are a few songs that we won’t ever find between the covers of our little green books, and I would like to share just a few of them with you. For … Continue reading

How to Hold On to What You Have

The proof that your Christian commitment was genuine is that you still are a Christian. The commitment to Jesus wasn’t a passing phase or an emotional high, but something that colors your life, every day affecting your choices, attitudes and decisions. Once, as Colossians 1:21 reminds is, we were ‘alienated’ from God .When we believe in and commit to Jesus, we become ‘reconciled’ to God. That reconciliation is brought about by the death of Jesus, 1 Peter 2:24. That single act of Jesus takes away our sin, takes away our guilt, takes away God’s wrath and gives us a new … Continue reading

Something Needed

In John 4 we saw Jesus piqued the Samaritan woman’s curiosity and how it was a good example for us to use in evangelism. In verse 13 Jesus tells her He has something she really wants, something precious. In Middle Eastern countries water was a precious and familiar commodity. But Jesus lets her know this is not just any ordinary water He is talking about, verse 14. The woman is drawn in. She wants what Jesus has. As Christians, we need to let our friends and neighbors see we have something they could do with, something they need. Something that … Continue reading

Author Interview – Karen Salmansohn

Today we are joined by Karen Salmansohn, author of the new book “Bounce Back,” a self-help book to help those of us who have experienced difficult trials to find their way back out into the sunshine. Karen, thank you for joining me today. What would you say are some of the most common setbacks people face? I call “setbacks going through “The Vortex.” And it seems everyone has one in their life (at least one)–a time when you are tested in seemingly insurmountable ways and things continue to go wrong, and you find yourself spiraling downward. Some people’s Vortex happen … Continue reading

My Mother’s Day Photo Surprise—The Gift that Keeps on Giving

I know, Father’s Day is just around the corner so why I am writing about my Mother’s Day gift? For starters, it’s an incredible gift and one that could easily be given to dad on his big day as well. The other reason… I wanted to experiment with my gift for a couple of weeks before writing this blog so I would be better able to assess its pros and cons. So what was my big Mother’s Day surprise (besides the gorgeous pink rose my young daughter picked out all by herself to give to me)? Canon’s PowerShot A720 IS … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Week in Review For April 14-20, 2008

With the sunshine replacing many of the rainy days we have been having, I have been trying to enjoy the weather whenever I can. This means I don’t have as much time to scrapbook, but it does mean I have a bit more time to write as I bring my laptop to the park or wherever I am planning on going. This is what I wrote while I was out and about this week. Adding a Bit of Flair on Layouts With Chalk Chalks, also known as pastels are so much fun to use on your scrapbook layouts. The vast … Continue reading

Hip and Stylish Digital Cameras for TEENS

With a name like Coolpix you know you’re not getting a standard brick-shaped black camera. If you are hip, happening, trendy and fashionable–in all aspects of your life—-as many teens are, then the following digital cameras might just make the cut. Personally, since becoming a mom I’m more about function than fashion, but with these cameras you aren’t sacrificing too much of the former for the latter. Take a look: NIKON COOLPIX S7c It’s almost too pretty to use. Well, not quite, but the Coolpix S7c is one of the most fashionable cameras on the market. It’s slender and curvy … Continue reading

Capturing Candid Shots

Posed shots are wonderful ways to document family members and friends. However, people tend to put on a mask when they pose and by doing so you lose the raw emotion of a given moment. Don’t get me wrong; posed shots or portraits are vital to have if you want formal artifacts of an event. I just personally enjoy mixing formal shots with a few candid ones. Whereas portraits contain a more intentional composition, candid shots allow you to be more creative and you are able to capture the true essence of an event a bit better. So how do … Continue reading

Daddy-Long-Legs (1955)

When I reviewed the young adult novel “Daddy-Long-Legs” by Jean Webster last week, I recalled that a movie by the same name had been made, and I headed over to Amazon to find it. It arrived in yesterday’s mail, and I had a wonderful time last night watching it. As I expected, the movie was quite different from the book, so I don’t worry about repeating myself as I review the film. Jervis Pendleton (Fred Astaire) is a happy-go-lucky and slightly immature bachelor millionaire. He’s never been married, has never taken business very seriously, and is only kept on track … Continue reading
