Three Keys to Peace

Have you ever thought how nice it would be if you could have peace regardless of what was happening in your life? I know it’s something I struggle with at times. But Philippians gives us some helpful tips about how to have that peace. One of the keys to achieving and maintaining peace is to ‘stand firm in the Lord,’ Philippians 4:1. It’s easy to become unsettled when we are flitting from one new thing to another. We need to come back to what we know to be true and stand firm in our Christian faith. The next key comes … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Book of Mormon – Keystone of Our Religion

Lesson #4 in the Joseph Smith manual for this year’s course of study is entitled, “The Book of Mormon: Keystone of Our Religion.” Three years after beholding the Father and the Son in the Sacred Grove, Joseph Smith was treated to another heavenly visitation, this time in his own bedroom from the Angel Moroni, who told him the location of the buried gold plates. When Joseph went to the place described on a nearby hill called Cumorah, he found the plates and was told by the angel that it was not time to take them. Every year for the next … Continue reading

Connected to the Source

Are you unconnected to the source of life? Jesus reminds us in the parable of the vine that God’s aim for our lives is that we bear fruit. The only way this can happen is if we are connected to the main part of the vine. Left to run wild though, it will not bear fruit properly either. The vine needs to be pruned so it will bear more fruit, verse 2. Although we are made clean by the Word and by believing in Jesus that is not enough for us to have a fruitful productive Christian life, verse 3. … Continue reading

Something Needed

In John 4 we saw Jesus piqued the Samaritan woman’s curiosity and how it was a good example for us to use in evangelism. In verse 13 Jesus tells her He has something she really wants, something precious. In Middle Eastern countries water was a precious and familiar commodity. But Jesus lets her know this is not just any ordinary water He is talking about, verse 14. The woman is drawn in. She wants what Jesus has. As Christians, we need to let our friends and neighbors see we have something they could do with, something they need. Something that … Continue reading

How to Find the Secret of Contentment

Do you struggle to find contentment in your life? We’ve all heard about the age old line about the grass being greener elsewhere. But sadly people often find out after they’ve tried it, after they’ve broken up a marriage or moved house or changed job or whatever it might be that is causing their discontent, that this is not the case. A simpler solution rather than chasing new experiences is to learn to be content in the situation we are in, which often appears easier said than done. So how can you find contentment? Is it even possible? The apostle … Continue reading

The Joys and Challenges of Family Projects

I love family projects—whether it is cookie baking, cleaning out the closets, or other ambitious undertakings, I really do enjoy (for the most part) doing projects with my kids. The truth is, however, it doesn’t always go well and we have had some major implosions over the years when it came to attempting to do family projects. I’ve learned that there are certain things we just can’t do together and that there are certain “arrangements” that work better than others… When my children were little, I used to try to coordinate big group projects for the holidays—jack-o-lantern carving, group cookie-baking, … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “Great Is Thy Faith”

The focus of this week’s lesson is on the receipt of the keys of the kingdom; as usual, the scriptures contain so many more lessons to be observed. As I started reading Lesson 13 today, I was touched by the faith of the Canaanite woman who pleaded with the Savior to heal her daughter. (Matthew 15:21-28) The story initially appears to be your typical “Master, please heal” one, as found throughout the scriptures. However, when you take a second look, you realize that this Canaanite woman was not an Israelite; she was a Gentile. Thus, when she asked the Lord … Continue reading

Obeying From Love

When it comes down to obedience, there are three main reasons to obey. The first comes from fear – looming punishment frightens us. The second comes from reward – we seek the prize or present. The third comes from love – we want to please the person who has asked for our obedience. Which of these do you think the Lord wants to have motivate us? We can choose to follow the commandments because of the looming fear of hell. Especially if you grew up outside of the church, you may have been exposed to images of evil pits and … Continue reading
