Little Eyes Are Watching

When I was little, the television in our home was often on. My parents were very good about ensuring that it was not the focus of my attention for much of the day, and I spent plenty of time playing outdoors, reading, and doing other things that kids do. What I do remember is that the television in the kitchen was generally on at breakfast and at dinner, because my parents like to watch the news. I don’t really watch the news any more. It’s not that I don’t care about what is going on in the world, because I … Continue reading

The Day the World Didn’t End

That would be yesterday. Hello. Yup, I’m still here. My clothes are still on my body and not sitting in a pile on the sidewalk where I stood at six yesterday evening… though there’s still a pile of dirty dishes sitting in my kitchen sink. Who does dishes when the world is about to end? No mystic ascension into the clouds dressed in a white robe. In fact, the last time I sported a robe was when I was in the hospital giving birth to my daughter. Now that was heaven. Giving birth to a healthy baby, not the robe … Continue reading

Watching the Royal Wedding

I have to admit, I was so annoyed with all the pre-wedding coverage prior to yesterday, but when the big day came, I set my DVR along with the rest of the world, and was sucked in by the wedding. I watched too many hours of coverage, and enjoyed every minute of it. Watching two people get married is always a beautiful thing. Add royalty to the mix and it becomes magical! I couldn’t help but think of my own wedding in the Salt Lake City temple. Mormon weddings are the opposite of royal weddings. We don’t walk down the … Continue reading

Why Disney World?

I have talked for years about my eventual Disney park trip. I never got to go as a child, so it’s something I assume I definitely want to do in my adulthood. I figure that I’m an avid Disney fan, so of course I will want to go to a Disney park. When I mention this to my husband, his first question is “yeah, but what would you do there?” As an adult I might want very different things out of a Disney park trip, and my youthful enthusiasm is also tempered by a rational need for practicality and frugality. … Continue reading

Withdraw from the World

‘A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere, before who I may think out loud,’ said Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ideally that person should be your spouse – the person above all others with whom you can be real. You don’t have to pretend. That’s what I like in our marriage, Mick and I don’t have to pretend with each other – ever. For us, this has not been a good week in that Mick and I have not been well. Nothing earth shattering, just the usual cold and flu winter ills, sore throats, stuffed up noses, coughing … Continue reading
