The Ultimate Tragedy?

Even if you don’t have kids of your own, you’ve got to feel for 16-year-old Austin Hatch. The standout high school basketball player from Indiana is not only fighting for his life right now, but he’s doing so without knowing that he is an orphan. The teen was critically injured in a plane crash last Friday, which killed his father and his stepmother. As tragic as that may be, there is much more to this horrific story. In 2003, Austin, his parents and his brother and sister were involved in another plane crash. During that accident, Austin and his dad … Continue reading

The Ultimate Life Coach

Today I was behind a learner driver on the way into town. This learner was belting down the highway at 100 kilometers an hour, which is the signposted speed. Except learners are not allowed to go over 80 kilometers per hour. If he’d read and taken notice of his rule book he would have known that rule. Maybe he did know and simply chose to ignore it, because when we got to roadwork where the speed limit was signposted as 80kph he dropped his speed to 90kph. When it dropped to 60kph he slowed to around 70kph. It made me … Continue reading

What is the Fitness Blog About?

You know, it’s been 18 months since the Fitness blog launched here at the Families.com. When I first began writing for it, I didn’t want it to be just another ubiquitous blog that told you how to exercise. I didn’t want to just post perfunctory entries each day that fulfilled some generic idea of what a fitness blog should be. I wanted to stamp my personality on it and I wanted to write the blog I wanted to read. I have no quixotic ideas about fitness. Exercise is a simple thing and we hear day in and day out how … Continue reading

Fitness Blog’s: The Week in Review Sept 23-29 It’s been a terrifically busy week here in the Fitness blog and you’d think after 10 months of talking about fitness, I’d be tired of it, but I’m far from that date. We’re winding September down and we’re heading into October. Be sure to check out the September End of the Month Fitness Goal Check today and be back here tomorrow to start our run on October fitness. We’re going to talk a lot about Women’s Fitness in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the meanwhile, here’s a review … Continue reading

Short and Long Term Goals

When a team takes the field for a game of footy they are playing with a goal in mind. The short term goal is to play the best they can and win the game. The long term goal is at the end of the season to hold up the premiership cup for their club. As Christians as we go through life the short term goals might be things we pray about and need to do that day. Do you take time each day to stop and pray about the things that God would have you do that day? Even as … Continue reading

Let’s Play! How to Bond with Your New Stepfamily

Not being much of a bowler myself, I was a little surprised when my then-boyfriend suggested that he take my daughter out for a few frames one Saturday afternoon. It was one of the first weekends I had invited him to visit when my daughter wasn’t with her Dad. (After many years of single parenthood, I continued to be very wary of involving her in my romantic liaisons when I wasn’t yet sure where they were headed). This weekend had been discussed between us at length; our relationship had become serious, and we were starting to talk about a future … Continue reading

The Influence of Music

Have you ever noticed the power of music to influence your moods, attitudes and actions? It’s no wonder experts have discovered music therapy. Last week at church we sang two songs. One was, ‘To live is Christ.’ That song has encouraged me and challenged me throughout this week to look at how I respond to what is happening in my life. Am I responding as Jesus would? Am I showing Christ to the world in the way I speak, the things I say and do? ‘No matter what price I pay, I choose to give this life away.’ Notice it’s … Continue reading

7 Marks of the Mature Christian – Part 2

My last blog gave 2 marks of the mature Christian. Here are the remaining 5 Marks of a mature Christian. 3. Prayer for others – This is what Paul did. He prayed for others, and what we need to do too. If you don’t have a prayer partner or are not part of a prayer covenant, can I suggest you do something about that? It’s a great help to your Christian life. It is interesting that Paul didn’t pray for them to be happy or to be healed from disease. He prayed for them to grow in their faith and … Continue reading

Why We Don’t Need Signs and Wonders

Why don’t we need signs and wonders to prove where we stand with God? Won’t they make us more spiritual or a better class of Christian? No. Because God has given us all we need for the Christian life Colossians tells us. What has he given us exactly? If we have accepted Jesus God has ‘qualified us’ just as he did the Colossian Christians ‘to share in the inheritance of the saints of light,’ Colossians 1:12. God had ‘delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,’ Colossians 1:13. It is through … Continue reading

What About Doing Good?

It seems everyone these days wants to write a children’s book. One of the latest is from Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan’s book ‘Forever Young’ is all about doing good. It seems to me, there is a misconception that the Christian, life is all about doing good. So often when we ask young children we get this answer to what a Christian is. And it’s not just children that have the wrong is idea that being a Christian is about doing good. In reality it’s not! Being a Christian is about trusting in the good that has already been done for … Continue reading
