The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

Christians and Depression

Christians should never suffer depression. That’s a common attitude from some people and it is decidedly wrong. People who claim Christians should never suffer depression have failed to understand a basic truth, that it is not something the person chooses to do. It is not showing a lack of faith or that they are lacking in their spiritual life. Depression is quite simply a medical condition like asthma or any other sickness. We don’t tell the person who has asthma it is because they don’t have enough faith or they are lacking in their spiritual life or if they prayed … Continue reading

Enjoying Christmas

Christmas Eve has been and gone. How did we spend it? In the morning we played tennis but petered out as the day became too hot and other things needed doing. Grabbed the last minute Christmas card out of the mail box and hung it on the card tree before lunch. Mick’s tomatoes, cucumbers and beans he grows have been staples of our diet recently and the passionfruit vines are raining passionfruit. Mick went and picked those that had fallen off the vine. Ten minutes later I went and picked up another eight. No doubt the southerly breeze that blew … Continue reading

Christmas Parties and Marriage

It’s that time of year. Christmas parties are in full swing. We’ve been to two in the last two nights. Other people I know are faced with the dilemma of two parties on the same night and having to make a choice. Now I love to have a good time, whether it’s at a party or anywhere else, but in the festive season we need to be a little more careful – careful when it comes to our marriages. Some people come over all kissy kissy at Christmas parties, especially when they have a little bit of alcohol on board. … Continue reading

A Happy Accident Gives Free Passionfruit

Sometimes things that happen by accident turn out for the best. One time a friend was given several passionfruit in a paper bag. She put them in the fridge. They got pushed to the back as things often do in fridges and as a result she forgot about them. By the time she discovered them they were all shriveled, so she decided to see if she could grow a passionfruit from the seeds. She planted them all in soil in pots. Sure enough in time little green shoots appeared. When the passionfruit plants were about eighteen inches high she moved … Continue reading

Santa’s Secret – Christy Hardman with Phil Porter

I know it’s August, and that does seem a little early to be bringing up the subject of Christmas. However, I have two reasons for reviewing this book today. First, book retailers traditionally bring out their Christmas merchandise right around now, so for them, it’s not too early to be thinking about the holidays. Second, and this reason is much more pressing, I’m hoping to get you in the mood for Christmas a little early this year, and I’ll explain why after I tell you about this book. Phil Porter has dressed up like Santa Claus for the last twelve … Continue reading

How Can You Tell if You Are Really a Christian?

How can you tell if you have really come to know Jesus and entered into a relationship with Him? In our home bible study group we recently started studying the John’s letters and 1 John 2 gives some answers to this question. I John 2:3 says we ‘know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commands.’ Obeying rules and regulations are not our entry ticket to heaven. That comes only through knowing Jesus. But, when we do know Jesus and have come into a relationship with Him, then we will want to please Him by keeping … Continue reading
