God’s Call

Jesus tells a parable of the landowner who went out early in the morning to find laborers for his vineyard, Matthew 20:1. The landowner found some men waiting to be hired, agreed on a wage and sent them off to work in his field. The landowner saw there were not enough workers, so the same thing happened when he went back at the third hour, except this time he told the workers ‘whatever is right I will give you,’ verse 4. The workers were happy to work under these conditions. This was repeated this at the sixth and ninth hour … Continue reading

Putting God in a Box – Part 3

Jesus broke free of the misconceptions and ideas the Samaritan woman had as we saw in yesterday’s blog. It was just the Samaritan woman tried to put Him in a box. Even the disciples had trouble with Jesus, His teaching and the fact that He did not fit the image they had of the Messiah. Some turned from Jesus when His teaching was difficult and did not please them, John 6:66. This departure obviously affected Jesus for he turned to the twelve and asked whether they also wanted to leave him, verse 68. Peter answered, ‘Lord, to whom shall we … Continue reading

Keeping God at a Distance.

Are you ever guilty of trying to keep God at a distance? Let’s look and learn from the Israelites. Exodus 20:18-26 1. The Israelites saw the lightning and the mountain in smoke. They saw evidence of the power of God before them and heard the thunder and the trumpet. It made them afraid for their lives. They sought to keep God at a distance, frightened of a closer relationship. They did not want God to speak directly to them but wanted Moses to act as intermediary. Do you ever want to keep God at a distance? Are you content to … Continue reading

The Names of God–Adonai

Out of all the names of God that we’re going to study, this is the one that goes against the grain in our society and culture. If we’re going to reject one of God’s attributes; one of His names–Adonai is the one that gets overlooked or twisted. Adonai means Lord and Master. Can you say that’s true in your life? Lord and Master In Biblical times, slavery was common and so I’m sure the ideas of servitude, submission and being dependant on a master were easily understood. A slave was not his own person, but was the property of the … Continue reading

The Names of Our God

Did you know that God has several names in the Old Testament? For instance, when you see the word “God”, you are reading the Hebrew word “Elohim”. When you see the word “Lord”, you are reading the Hebrew word “Adonai”. Likewise when you see the word “LORD” with all capital letters, you are seeing the Hebrew word Yahweh or Jehovah. The Jehovah names of God are also broken down to several other, more specific names for God. The fascinating thing about the names of God is that they each have a specific meaning that teach us something about the character … Continue reading

There’s a Need – So What?

In my last blog we looked at how God wants workers not shirkers. So you’ve been asked by someone in your church or community to take on an area of ministry or service. Should you dive right in, even if you’re not sure about it, because you have been asked and because there is a need? I know some churches would advocate that if there is a need you should fill it. But and as far as I’m concerned it’s a big BUT… Never mind what someone else thinks you should be doing, is it what God wants you to … Continue reading

Out of Place

Have you ever met someone and you know their face is familiar and you know them but can’t think where from? I have great difficulty with this one, especially if I can’t place the person in the right context. It happened recently. I saw a guy at choir and couldn’t determine if it was someone I knew from tennis or not, because he was dressed differently. In the end I realized it was. This weekend my husband kept thinking he knew this guy but couldn’t figure out where from. It turns out he is our new mayor and his face … Continue reading

What Do You See in the Mirror?

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Most of us if we’re honest, don’t always like the image reflected. Too often, I see the lines creeping in on my face or the extra weight I’m carrying which, despite walking, playing tennis and watching what I eat, never seems to change much. In a book I read recently ‘No Going Back’ by Lynda Page, the main character, Judith, was amazed what a difference it made to her face when she smiled and also how differently people responded to her. When we think about God, do we have a … Continue reading

Seven Lessons About Teaching and the Authority of Jesus.

Does your life reflect the teaching and authority of Jesus? Let’s look at Mark 1:21-28 1. Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach and the people were amazed ‘because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law,’ verse 22. If you or I are in positions where we teach others in Sunday school, kids’ clubs, bible study or church situations, does our teaching have the authority of Jesus behind it? It should do, if we are doing it in His strength, being faithful to God’s word and enabled by the Holy … Continue reading
