A Heart Happy General Conference Weekend

This past weekend was general conference, and it was a lovely weekend full of laziness and spiritual inspiration. I have a bad cold I’ve been battling for a few days, so I was thankful to be able to stay in my PJs and watch conference at home. I had some plans to do a lot of house work, but fortunately, I didn’t do any of it so that I could take it easy since I was sick. It was a blessing in disguise. I was more focused on the talks, and was able to soak up a lot of the … Continue reading

Does Someone Elses Opinion Really Matter?

Do you really care how clean your house is or do you keep it a certain way because it’s expected or because of what other people will think? Don’t get me wrong, I like a clean house, but it doesn’t break my heart if it’s not perfect. Bookshelves are dusty, so is the mantle. There are a few dishes in the sink, the carpet needs to be vacuumed and the kitchen table is my dumping ground. Let someone say they are stopping by and I fly around the house. I dust, vacuum, clean the kitchen table, wash the dishes, hang … Continue reading

Men Can Inherit Heart Disease From Their Father

You may have heard that heart disease is something that can run in families. A new study shows that there is a form of heart disease that a father can give to his son via the Y chromosome. Genealogists who are putting together a medical family tree might want to make a note of this discovery. Heart disease can run in families. Does it run in yours? Your parents might know the answer to that question. Genealogists can ask family members if any relatives have been diagnosed with heart disease. Ask if anyone was diabetic, or had high blood pressure, … Continue reading

General Conference 2011-The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn

I am not one to do a lot of genealogy myself. Although, I do understand the importance of it. My patriarchal blessing talks about it, and I write a lot about it here. But, I do not do a lot of things to research names, and progress the work. I always think that is something I will have time to do when I’m a little older. But, what if that time never comes? Elder Bednar’s talk in General Conference was about just that. He spoke of not putting off our genealogy by saying it is something we will do when … Continue reading

Bowen’s Heart

Each year, 40,000 US children are born with a congenital heart defect. While the type of defect and its severity can vary from person to person, each family must cope with the anxiety, the pain and the unknown. This year, one of those families was that of Matt Hammitt, the lead singer of Sanctus Real. His son Bowen was born on September 9, 2010 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The left side of his heart was severely underdeveloped and blood was not pumping correctly to his body. Bowen underwent his first open heart surgery just a few days after birth. … Continue reading

Enthusiasm is What Matters

I love this time of year. The air is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and the trees are beautiful. Just yesterday we headed out towards the local university in a wind storm, and we felt like we were in the middle of a red and yellow leafy wind tunnel. Everything is winding down towards a good sleep, which sounds like a plan to me. In my daily life, I teach kids about the outdoors. I teach partners too, and teachers. Every year in the fall, a group of amazing early childhood educators gets together at the university close … Continue reading
