The First Family (2)by Lisa Kennedy | More from this Blogger In an earlier blog I wrote about the husband and wife (Adam and Eve) of the first family. Now I want to turn my attention to the children of Adam and Eve. The Bible speaks of the children of Adam and Eve in Genesis 4:1 through Genesis 5:4. Three children of Adam and Eve are specifically named, Cain, Abel, and Seth; however, it is very important to note that Genesis 5:4 states: "After he (Adam) begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters." Adam and Eve had more sons and daughters after Seth was born. The Bible does not describe the youth of Cain and Abel; however, the Bible does describe a couple of events when they are older. The relationship between Cain and Abel is an extreme case of sibling jealousy. According to Genesis 4:2, ". . . Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground." Cain and Abel both bring a sacrifice to the Lord: Cain brings "an offering of fruit from the ground" (Genesis 4:3) and Abel brings an offering "of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat" (Genesis 4:4). In Genesis 4:3-4 the Bible states: "And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell." Cain's anger kindled to the point that he rose up against Abel and killed him. The Bible does not specifically say why Abel's sacrifice was more pleasing to the Lord, but Hebrews 11:3 confirms Genesis 4:3-4: "By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks." The sacrifices of Cain and Abel show that the Lord desires specific obedience to Him. In Genesis 4:25 the Lord blesses Adam and Eve again with another son: "And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."
