Thanksgiving: A Good Reminder

I love Thanksgiving! It is one of my favorite times of year. I enjoy the fellowship with friends and family, the food, as well as the time to reflect on how blessed I have been in my life. While I certainly do not celebrate Thanksgiving as any sort of religious holiday, it certainly can be that “friendly reminder” to Christians to be thankful for all of God’s rich blessings. Christians have even more to be thankful for than the rest of the world because we have received blessings from God. I want to use this blog as a reminder to … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Thanksgiving

For family home evening this week you may want to review the events leading up to the first Thanksgiving. This story talks about religious persecution, and the hopes that many who came to our country had. The lesson can then lead into things that each of you are grateful for. It is nice to have a reminder of all that we have at the beginning of the Holiday season. You can open the lesson by reading 1 Nephi 13:11-19. This is where Nephi prophesies of the Gentiles discovering America. You can then briefly review the story of Columbus and the … Continue reading

Decorating Tips For Your Thanksgiving Dinner Table—Part 2

We’re turning the spotlight on the Thanksgiving dinner table. The big feast day is now just five days away. Sure, the table is the place where the holiday bird takes center stage with it’s supporting cast of side dishes, but it’s also where you can show off your decorating prowess, even if you don’t consider yourself in the same league as Martha Stewart. Here are more ways you can add spark to your holiday dinner table: Flower Power Consider skipping the traditional fall gimmicks of pinecones, pumpkins and plastic turkey table toppers and brightening your table with fresh chrysanthemums or … Continue reading

Decorating With Gratitude

It’s Thanksgiving. This means that around the country, people are sitting with family and friends, sharing food and family time. Perhaps that family is a family of two, or it might be a family of twenty and counting. Perhaps that family is a family of friends and neighbors, of people who are dear to you. It may be that you are alone today, sharing this time with your own thoughts. Sometimes it can be hard to feel thankful. We live in a time of great change, when families are challenged to live within their own means and the means of … Continue reading

Grateful for Baby

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I decided to think about all the things that I am grateful for about my job as a Mother to my sweet little baby. Yesterday, one of my older children was sick. I had very little sleep, and had been up since about 2 am. Needless to say, I was pretty grouchy when the sun started to rise and I had to continue on with my daily duties as a Mom. But, then my baby woke up. I walked into his room, and he smiled at me (like he always does). I thought to myself, … Continue reading

Do You Really Need to Deep Clean?

Not your pores; your house. It seems everywhere I go these days someone or something is reminding me to deep clean my house in time for spring. For some reason, the season of new beginnings heralds the arrival of gratings reminders that it is time to get on my knees and scrub the dirty bathroom floors that I have neglected since Thanksgiving. Spring cleaning—BAH! HUMBUG! Sadly, there are quite a number of cleaning projects on my list. However, housekeeping is not only about removing dirt and grime from countertops and toilet seats. There are many other aspects to keeping a … Continue reading

Teaching Teens Thankfulness

When children are very young they tend to be very selfish and think the world revolves around them. If they do grow out of it, it seems to come back when they are teenagers. It can be difficult for teens to see past their concerns and circumstances. For some teens everything is a drama and everything revolves around them. The world can be coming apart at the seams but if they can’t find anything to wear, that is all that matters. Teaching teens to be thankful isn’t always easy. Many times all they see is what they don’t have … Continue reading

More Tips to Consider Before Snapping Your Holiday Photo

Many families spend the long Thanksgiving weekend snapping photos for their annual Christmas card. The holiday weekend is an especially good time to take a family shot if you have children, who are home from college, or you have grandkids visiting from other parts of the country. Family gatherings are also ideal times to snap shots because you have more photographers at your disposal. If you can’t stand working with your camera’s self timer or you don’t own a tripod, it is virtually impossible to take a decent group shot of your entire clan when you are at home. If … Continue reading

Health and Gratitude

It’s that time of year: time to start counting our blessings. Holiday season is upon us, with Thanksgiving tomorrow (for U.S. folks) and winter holidays on the horizon. I think gratitude is a healthy thing. It’s so easy to get mired down in what’s wrong, what’s hard, what’s stressful… and forget all the things that are good in our lives. Sometimes, stopping to take stock can be a real eye-opener. It’s a great chance to let the good things shine for a while. I happened to be at the doctor’s office today — my first appointment at a new office. … Continue reading

Thanks for Giving

For giving me the keys to the car last Saturday night, money for my field trip, a roof over my head, a closet full of clothes, three meals a day… Thanksgiving may be the only day of the year you hear those words uttered by your self-absorbed teenagers. Then again, you may happen to parent a child who defies typical teen-dom and actually demonstrates an attitude of gratitude on a daily basis. If this is the case, then you have one more thing to be thankful for next Thursday. Children aren’t the only ones who are guilty of taking things … Continue reading
