Teaching Children Through Song

Over the years I have found that one of the most effective ways to teach children about the Bible or Biblical concepts is through song. There are many advantages to using songs as a way to help children learn about Biblical ideas. Songs are fun, exciting, and interesting to children. Singing is an engaging activity, both mentally and physically. Children can sing these songs just about anytime from riding to school or doing their chores. Songs also provide an easy way for children to remember Bible stories or Biblical things.

Below I have listed just a few songs which can help children learn more about the Bible. It is important to note that I have listed these songs by the titles I have known them by throughout my life which may or may not be the titles you know them by.

• "Oh, Be Careful Little . . ." This song reminds children of the importance of their actions.
• "Days of Creation" This song will help children remember the days of creation found in the first chapter of Genesis.
• "Zacchaeus was a Wee Little Man" This song recounts the story of Zacchaeus found in Luke 19:1-10.
• "I Want to Be a Worker for the Lord" This song teaches children about the necessity to share the Lord and trust in His Word.
• "My God is So Big" This song emphasizes God's greatness and power in a way children can easily understand.
• "Jesus Loves Me" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children" These classic songs help children remember a very important concept: God loves them.
• "First John 4:7-8" As I have mentioned in other blogs I love this song because it comes directly from the Scripture (not to mention it is a very catchy tune!).
• "The Wise Man Built His House" This songs stems from Jesus' teaching in Matthew 7:24-27. Two of the children in my Bible class loved singing this song so much they continued to sing it when they went home. I was thrilled to know that they would share the song at home with their family.

So true, Lisa! We use songs for not only Bible truths, but history, science, and geography, too. We are definitely crafted for music!

We use a lot of Colin Buchanan songs. Our grandchildren love him and know most of his songs. Colin is an Aussie singer. Good tunes and biblical truths presented in a fun way. Last week at our Scripture class we taught the simple John 3:16 by Jenny Flack. We taught that years ago at a kids club and my daughter, our adult, says she still always hears that verse set to music.
