Super Reads

For some kids, getting a book in their Christmas stocking is about as exciting as receiving underwear, a toothbrush, or an apple. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Shatter the myth this holiday season by gifting your good guy or gal with the following super reads that pit bad blood against legendary super heroes: Superman Classic: Attack of the Toyman Don’t let the name fool you. Toyman is no Santa Claus. In fact, the diabolical villain is trying to play all of Metropolis. His first move: Unleash an attack by attaching explosives to remote-control cars. Toyman’s evil plan … Continue reading

The Avengers: The Ultimate Superhero Movie

“The Avengers” blew my mind. How can I ever settle for just one superhero in a movie again, now that I’ve seen what it’s like with six? If you’re a fan of comic book movies, of superheroes, of big-budget action flicks with a whole lot of story and heart, then you don’t need to read any more of my review. Go see “The Avengers.” Now. Go see it multiple times. Tell Hollywood that they need to keep putting director (and script writer and co-story writer) Joss Whedon in charge of movies. If you’re not sure where you stand on superheroes, … Continue reading

Marvel Introducing Line of Superhero Storybooks

When Disney bought Marvel nearly a year ago, many fans were torn as to whether this would herald a new era for the company or a disaster for one of the leading comic book institutions. One thing no one questioned, however, was why the Mouse House was interested in Marvel. Disney wanted a property for boys as prolific as its Princess and Pixie lines for girls, and Marvel provides that in spades. For the most part evidence of Marvel’s new ownership hasn’t been that obvious, at least to the more casual viewer. The most notable change was over the San … Continue reading

The Superhero and the Damsel

Does your man feel like a superhero? Like he can do anything in your eyes? If you think about it, men like to believe they are conquerors. They like to be viewed as someone who can go above and beyond your expectations. They want to be seen as strong, the one who comes to the rescue. My husband does this in a number of ways. He can open any jar, fix just about anything in our house and can find solutions to virtually any problem. If he could don a cape, I think he might. While most men like to … Continue reading

Superman Found – After Insurance Claim Paid

Superman has been found, years after disappearing! It’s kind of a strange story that started when a rare Superman comic was stolen from actor Nicholas Cage. The actor filed an insurance claim for it, which was paid. So, what happens to the Superman comic now? Nicholas Cage is an Oscar winning actor. His Oscar was awarded in 1996, for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the movie “Leaving Las Vegas”. He’s been in dozens of other movies since then, including “Face/Off” with John Travolta, “Gone in Sixty Seconds” with Angelina Jolie, and “Adaptation”, where he played two characters who … Continue reading

LAPD Cracks Down on Walk of Fame Superheroes – Part 2

One of my favorite places to visit in Hollywood is the Walk of Fame and Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Yes, I know it’s touristy, but guess what? I am a total tourist when it comes to Hollywood. One of the first times we visited, my husband had his picture taken with a Wonder Woman impersonator. He tipped her, but those days have come to an end as the LAPD has banned the superhero characters from appearing in costume. Christopher Dennis, who has dressed as Superman for 19 years, was arrested earlier this month for loitering. Dennis’ defense was “They charged me … Continue reading

LAPD Cracks Down on Walk of Fame Superheroes – Part 1

If you have ever been to Hollywood, you have probably seen the superheroes that appear in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s a gimmicky thing that tourists love – or do they? The Los Angeles Police Department has shut down the impersonators because they received several complaints of harassment. I watched a documentary about these impersonators titled Confessions of a Superhero. In the documentary, Christopher Dennis, who has been portraying Superman for 19 years now, has his picture taken with tourists and reminds them that the superheroes only work for tips. He definitely looks the part, but … Continue reading

Back Pain and the End of Superheroes

Last Thursday and Friday are long gone. They were useless days spent in pain. My back is totally destroyed and I’m headed to the doctor’s office in the early morning hours tomorrow to see if it can either be fixed or heavily medicated. When I look back on my grandmother (specifically) and remember her using a walker, with tennis balls on the bottom, I now envy her. I wish I had one. I’m having trouble standing, sitting, turning, everything! The only thing I can do is lay still staring at the ceiling with a heating pad below me and a … Continue reading

Original Superman Comic Book Goes on the Auction Block

If you are a comic book fan like my husband, you may be drooling as you read this blog. Starting today, fans, at least those with a lot of money, will be able to start bidding on an unrestored copy of the “Superman and Friends” No. 1 comic book. (This image is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 with a copyright notice, and its copyright was not renewed.) There are about 100 existing copies of the comic that was first released in June 1938 for 10 cents. However, most of … Continue reading

Pseudo-Celebrity Arrests: “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” Actor and Heroes Father

No big names being arrested this week like recent arrestees Raffaelo Follieri (Anne Hathaway’s ex) or rapper DMX, but pseudo-celebrity names are making headlines for offenses. If you watched the movie “The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” you may remember actor Shelley Malil. He played one of Steve Carell’s co-workers, but has also appeared in numerous television shows including “NYPD Blue” and “Reba.” The 43 year old was arrested for attacking a former girlfriend in Oceanside, California Monday night as he got off a train. Actually, it turns out to be more brutal than it sounds. The unidentified woman was found in … Continue reading
