Bible Documentation Day

Have you ever heard of Bible Documentation Day? It isn’t a national holiday, or even one specific to a particular state. It is a day that the South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society set aside to help people do genealogy research from their old family bibles. Those old family bibles that have been handed down from one generation to the next can hold a wealth of genealogy information. Previous generations of your family may have used their bible as the place to record births, marriages, and deaths of family members. There might be information about the birth places of several of … Continue reading

Funeral Cards Tell Life Stories

Funeral cards, or prayer cards, as they are sometimes called, each hold the story of a person’s life. The purpose of the card is to provide a summary of the life of the deceased. For genealogists, a funeral card is a valuable source of information. There are plenty of websites where a genealogist can go to locate funeral cards. I still have a funeral card from the funeral services of each of my grandmothers, and also one from the funeral of my aunt. I cannot explain exactly why I decided to hang onto these funeral cards for so many years, … Continue reading

Two Love Stories

Last Friday Mick took me to the movies. We saw ‘Nights in Rodanthe.’ I’m a big fan of Nicholas Sparks and read the book some time back, so as soon as I saw the movie on I wanted to go. Mick had been through two previous films from books by Nicholas Sparks. ‘The Notebook’ was the first which he thought was a beautiful though sad story and well acted. If you haven’t seen it, it is the story of a couple’s over and how when she has Alzheimer’s he keeps reminding her of their love their story. Though he enjojed … Continue reading

Strong Women in the Bible

As we read through the Bible, we find many instances of strong, righteous men who loved the Lord and did their best to serve them. I’d like to take a few minutes to discuss some of the strong women and their contribution to our canon of scripture. First was Eve. Placed upon this earth to set the path for all the women who would come after her, she knew and understood the importance of multiplying and replenishing the earth. Her actions made it possible for all of us to be here. Sarah also comes to mind. Wife of Abraham, she … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Bible Stories

This week’s family home evening lesson is loosely based on “The Miracle of the Holy Bible” by Elder M Russell Ballard. You may want to take time to read this talk and highlight any specific portions that you want to cover with your children. Additionally you may want to spend some time preparing your children for conference. You may want to emphasize that the stories and counsel given in conference are just the same as when the prophets in the Bible spoke to the people of their time. You may also want to ask your children to come prepared to … Continue reading

In his talk “The Miracle of the Holy Bible” Elder M Russell Ballard talks about the blessings the Bible brings to each of us. He also speaks of the importance Johannes Gutenberg and the printing press. Elder Ballard goes on to speak about the sacred words that are found in the Bible. He points out that it is through the Bible that we learn about the church and Jesus Christ. … Continue reading

Obedience – the Stories of Samson and Joshua

Samson is one of the heroes of the Bible. He made a covenant with God that he would abide by the commandments, and as a token of this covenant, he promised God that he would never cut his hair. He grew to be mighty and strong, and everyone wondered what was the power behind his strength. A beautiful and cunning woman named Delilah managed to get him to confess that his strength came from his hair, and she caused a servant to come in and cut his hair while he slept. His strength was taken from him, and he ended … Continue reading

Oaths and the Bible

Probably most of us have heard the controversy around Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to be elected to serve in the United States Congress, who had announced he would not be taking his ceremonial oath of office on the Bible as traditionally done—-even by non-Christians and Jews. He had instead expressed his wish to take his oath on the Koran. This has become a controversial issue because according to the belief of many Muslims and Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali, to lie is basically justified as long as it is for Allah or the for the sake of the religion (Ahmad … Continue reading

Subway Stories

My cousin celebrated his 25th birthday in New York City last night. (He lives on Long Island so the excitement surrounding the event wasn’t derived from the location.) As you can imagine it was a late night and he ended up riding the subway to a friend’s home in Queens. When I spoke to him earlier today he was desperately trying to find his iPod. From what he can remember, it was still in his jacket pocket when he boarded the subway last night. But, this morning it was gone. Losing your iPod on a New York City subway… please! … Continue reading
