Blackout

Last night we had a blackout. I woke to find the overhead fan and the clock next to the bed off and the room in complete darkness with no light coming in from the street light outside. Blackout, I thought and wondered how long it would go on for. This was at 3.30am. My husband said the electricity had been off since midnight. I started to think of the fridge and freezer filled with food and hoped the electricity would not be off too long. Since there was nothing I could do about it, instead of worrying about food spoiling … Continue reading

Faith and Persistence Bring Results

Faith and persistence what place do they have in your life? Faith and persistence need to go to hand in hand, as we see when we look at Mark 2:1-12 1. The people in Capernaum heard about Jesus and so they gathered eagerly to hear what He had to say to them, verse 1,2. How eager are we to meet with Him? Are you meeting with Him in your own quiet time as well as gathering with other people on a regular basis to learn more of Him? Are you listening for what He has to say to you through … Continue reading

Where is Your Secret Place?

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2) A “secret place” is somewhere you can commune with the Lord; you can seek Him and pour out your soul. It’s a safe place where it’s just you and God; where the cares of the world cease. Sometimes we can get too wrapped up in our day to day life and forget the need to connect, just us with … Continue reading

Have You Asked God?

Are you going through something in your life right now that makes you feel as though God doesn’t care about you? There have been times when I have been dealing with someone going through a personal crisis who has said something like, “God doesn’t care about me.” or, “Doesn’t God see what I’m going through?” The meaning is clear: God isn’t doing what the person thinks He should be doing. There are two reasons why a person might feel this way: 1. The person has not asked God for help. In Exodus 22:16-31, God discusses personal offenses that are committed … Continue reading

Do You Have Time to Pray With Your Spouse?

Do you ever feel as though you have no idea what your spouse is thinking? Do you ever feel like you are just not thinking along the same lines or as though you don’t have the same priorities? Let me ask you another question: Do you pray with your spouse? In our busy lives it is often difficult to get five minutes alone with our husband to talk to him, much less pray with him. Our days are filled with taking care of our jobs, our homes and our children. Often when we finally have some time in which our … Continue reading

Tithing: Does God Really Expect Me to Give Ten Percent?

My husband was sitting with a coworker, Kevin, discussing faith. Kevin was an atheist who borrowed concepts from several world religions, my husband, Josh, a committed Christian. Kevin said something like, “Did you know the Bible teaches that Christians should give ten percent of what they make to their church? Can you imagine what would happen if people actually did that?” He was incredulous. “Yes, I can believe it,” Josh replied, “Our family tithes.” It’s interesting to contemplate a non-Christian’s view of giving such a substantial amount of money to a church. What becomes discouraging is realizing that a very … Continue reading

The Great Commission

The Great Commission is the mandate of God to Christians to spread the Gospel to every person. Jesus spoke the words of the Great Commission to his disciples just before He ascended into heaven. Matthew 28:19-20 may be the best summary of this mandate: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the ends of the world.” This command, I believe, also applies to … Continue reading

Week in Review: Skeptics to Being Busy

This week I wanted to put a little more focus on reaching out as Christians. I shared about dealing with those who are critical and skeptical; the challenge in witnessing to such and handling debates when they arise. I also wrote about the harvest of souls ready for a savior, giving your all, and making time for God. In Skeptics and Critics: The Challenge, I talked about some of the challenging questions asked by those who are skeptical of Christianity. The Bible tells us we should have an answer for the hope that is in us so it’s important we … Continue reading

Sorry God, I’m Just Too Busy

I can’t be the only one who feels this way from time to time? Sometimes I feel in somewhat of a robotic mode trying to get this or that accomplished and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day. Sadly the things that seem to be of most importance are often put on hold: family being a big one, but most importantly God, the giver of family, life, and even our abilities. I don’t know that we were designed to take on as much as we do sometimes. I wonder if the result of taking on more … Continue reading
