The Importance of God’s Word

The book of Nehemiah shows us, among other things, the importance of reading, and obeying God’s Word. Nehemiah 8:1-8 As Ezra reads God’s Word, the people praise God. The people gather and Ezra reads God’s words to them. All morning he reads to them and the Bible says they ‘were attentive’ to the Word, verse 3. They also worshipped the Lord. Some Things to Think About How important is God’s Word to you? Reading God’s Word should encourage us to worship Him. Have you read God’s Word today? If not, why not take time to do it now? What has … Continue reading

The Murmurings of Our Hearts Because We Did Not Understand

We’re told that if we read the Book of Mormon regularly, we’ll learn something new every time. I didn’t think 1 Nephi had anything new in it for me – I think I’ve read that book at least three times more than I have the rest of the book. You know how it is – you get started, get off track, and then start again at the beginning. But while reading it again for the Hinckley Challenge, sure enough, I found something I’d never seen before. Take a look with me at these verses. 1 Nephi 2:11: Now this he … Continue reading

Adoption Blog Month in Review, April 2007: Part One

I’d like to start this April Month-in-Review with a word about March. Most of you know that my co-blogger Ed Paul left. However he was a prolific writer here so there are many blogs in our archives to enjoy—check some out! When Ed left, Rachel Whitmire (who wrote for the adoption blog before either Ed or I did) was ready to come back from her leave of absence–during which she picked up her toddler son Jayden from Guatemala! She has about ten blogs in the adoption blog in late March describing aspects of her journey and new motherhood. Check them … Continue reading

God is Big Enough to Carry You

I think this is something too often many of us forget. Just because God is invisible to us does not reduce Him to anything weak or less significant. When in need, not every person goes running to God first. Many of us have been taught at a very young age to look for tangible outlets when in need first such as medicine, friends, an addiction, time in isolation, exercise. While some of these things are helpful, an absence of God is not going to bring benefits only the Lord can. Sometimes it takes until every tangible support is gone for … Continue reading

What is God Like?

As a Christian, I always think it is exciting when I find a verse in Scripture that gives me a clear picture of the Character of God. In Exodus 34, God tells Moses that He will pass by him and show him some of His glory. In fact, God says that His glory is so great that Moses will not be allowed to look on His face because the sheer magnificence of God would kill him. As God passes by Moses, He puts His “hand” over Moses’ eyes to protect Moses from seeing His face and dying. After He is … Continue reading

Your Biggest Fans

My husband is quite the super star in our home. While I’m with our kindergartener and three year old all day, feeding them and playing with them, it’s their daddy who gets flooded with adoration when coming home from work. At the sound of the garage door opening, the kids drop everything they are doing as if some super pop star has just arrived. It’s not just our boys who are excited to see him either. My husband’s arrival home means I have my best friend with me again to talk with and to help occupy the kids. We are … Continue reading

The Godfather of Soul – Dead at Age 73

After writing about the death of former Senator Stafford, I am beginning to feel a bit like the grim reaper, but I could not pass the opportunity to write about the passing of The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, James Brown. I read in the news yesterday that Brown had a severe case of pneumonia, but his publicist said he wasn’t in intensive care, so I thought maybe it was something he could recover from, but apparently not. He died early Christmas morning of congestive heart failure as a result of the pneumonia. Brown lived what one comedian called … Continue reading

God’s 4:45 a.m. Message

At 7:20 last evening, my oldest son started complaining of his ear hurting. My husband decided while the urgent care was still opened, it would be better to get him in tonight and at least get him started on a prescription if he needed it. Sure enough, upon taking him in, the doctor said my son had a very red and swollen ear. Last night I was searching the house for Tylenol to give to my son as the Motrin alone wasn’t helping much. Those screams of pain coming from my son made me wish it was me there and … Continue reading

Our Potter

Like a potter’s hands mold and form the clay, so does God with us. I liken our walk without the Lord to being our own potter. Without an all knowing wisdom or direction, we can still sculpt ourselves in to something. Sometimes it’s functional; sometimes it’s full of holes, tears or bends that can’t be worked out. If you’ve worked with clay on a potter’s wheel, you might recall frustration the first time you tried to create. If your work doesn’t take form, it can become difficult to work with and needs to be either cut away or recycled. This … Continue reading

Honoring Your Mother and Father

I was fortunate enough to be raised in a loving home with both my mom and my dad. It’s not difficult to find ways to honor and respect them today because they were good to us. I know not everyone can say this about their parents. When asked how one honors a mother or father they don’t respect, I had to sit and really think about this one. Commandment number five of the Ten Commandments given by God states in Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother…” In Ephesians 6:2 furthers the point, “’Honor your father and mother.’ Which … Continue reading
