Psalm 5: Praying Expectantly to Combat Discouragement

The older I get and the closer I grow to the Lord, the more I’ve come to realize that discouragement is really ungodly thinking in disguise. I don’t really mean to say that one should never be discouraged. But rather a discouragement without hope, one that ruins our day and our thoughts, is discouragement that hasn’t been handed over to God. And yet, how do we hand discouragement over to God? David, if anyone, had a reason to be discouraged. Like so many of God’s faithful he was persecuted for doing nothing wrong. He served Saul faithfully, so faithfully in … Continue reading

Psalm 1: Uncompromising Godliness

Yesterday I gave a brief introduction to the Psalms as well as to David’s life, who is the author of many of the Psalms. Today we’re going to delve right into Psalm 1 and look at some of the truth there. I am going to follow a somewhat inductive pattern of study and so you might find it helpful to pull out your Bible and pen if you’re using this for devotions. The Progression of Sinful Compromise Look at the first 3 verses of Psalm 1. . .”Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the … Continue reading

Are You a Jekyll and Hyde?

When I told someone about the musical version of Jekyll and Hyde they scathingly said ‘like you would. How could you make a musical of that!’ They continued to look skeptical, when I assured them it was great and contains some lovely songs. The musical is based on the book ‘TheStrange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. The other night I listened to the CD cast recording of Jekyll and Hyde with Anthony Warlow. (One of my favorite singers) We saw a production of this musical last year by the Orange Theatre Company and I was … Continue reading

Clean, But For How Long?

Our puppy loves water. She likes nothing better than to be put in the laundry tub and bathed, unlike our other dog that runs a mile at the mere mention of the word ‘bath.’ She happily gets soaped up, rubbed and rinsed. Since she is low to the ground and is an outdoor some of the time and loves investigating everything, the bathwater ends up an interesting color. Dried and brushed, she looks adorable with her ginger fur tinged with black on ears and around her mouth and on her tail. Unfortunately she doesn’t stay clean long. Too soon she … Continue reading

Unused Gifts

Have you ever given a person a gift and never seen them wear it or never seen them use it? I know I have. And it hurts to think it is not appreciated. When buying a gift for those I care about I put a lot of thought and effort into buying something I think the person would like. To never see it worn or used or displayed makes me feel that time and effort of choosing it was wasted. I imagine the Lord must feel like that too when He gives us gifts and they are not used. The … Continue reading

Exclusivity Or Not?

An argument arose between the disciples as to who was the greatest, Luke 9:46. Jesus not only heard the argument, He knew what they were thinking, Luke 9:47. Does it scare or concern you that Jesus knows your innermost thoughts. He knows what is behind the words we say and the way we act. So, what did Jesus mean by placing a child next to him and saying what he did in verse 48? Jesus wanted to overturn all their ideas about greatness. He wanted the disciples to be not self centered and exclusive, but welcoming. What about you? How … Continue reading
