Practical Help for Christian Living

The book of Romans is one of the helpful and practical letters in the New Testament. Just look at some of the gems from Romans 8. Romans 8:1 assures believers of their standing before God. There is ‘no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.’ Paul goes on to tell us that those who believe in Jesus have been ‘set free, from the law of sin and death,’ verse 2. The reason we are set free is not because of anything we have done or because of keeping rules but because of what Jesus has done for us through … Continue reading

Rememberance of Things Past

One of the things we tend to do as human beings at times, is forget too easily. Compare two people and their memories of the same experience and you will soon see how different they are, because we forget. We can do the same with forget, we forget too easily. When we are undergoing a difficult situation, we need to remember how God has helped us and delivered us in the past. Past experience of God builds our trust and encouragement and hope for the future. It was David’s past experience of God and God’s faithfulness and deliverance that enabled … Continue reading

Miracle Worker

Sometimes we can be blind to the things God is doing in our world. You often hear people say, ‘If God is so powerful, why doesn’t He do something? Why doesn’t He act in the world and change things?’ You might have even made such comments yourself at times. We might wonder why God doesn’t work miracles as he did in Bible times. Let me assure you He does. Often we just don’t hear about it. But this morning some information came from the Bible Society and it clearly shows God is still at work in the world and still … Continue reading

What a Difference it Would Make

Today I’m going to look at more practical advice from Romans 12. If you remember, last week I looked at what it means to be a living sacrifice. I’d like to suggest now that if we are a ‘living sacrifice,’ putting other’s needs and the needs of God’s kingdom above our own, if we are concerned with these things and pleasing God, we are less likely to become conceited and puffed up with our own self importance, Romans 12:3. There is another side to having sound judgment about ourselves. As well as not being conceited, it also means not putting … Continue reading

The Church is Full of Hypocrites

The church is full of hypocrites. Have you ever heard that comment? Maybe you’ve even said it or thought it yourself? There are times when I feel like a hypocrite. For example the other day I let frustration and anger get the better of me. Afterwards I felt awful about the situation. But sadly, as is so often the case, it wasn’t something I could go back and fix. I was left replaying the situation over and over in my mind. Then on Sunday I was up leading the singing in church. I felt like the biggest hypocrite, even more … Continue reading

The Danger of Selective Reading

Recently it occurred to me that there are distinct similarities between crossword puzzles and reading the bible. Let me explain. Often in a crossword, the clue doesn’t seem to make sense. You can’t think of the word you need to fill in the squares. Then you work on a couple of the clues going the other way. That fills in some of the letters and suddenly, you have enough clues to figure out the missing word. It’s like a light making everything clear. It’s like that when we’re reading the bible. We need to look at what is going on … Continue reading

Someone Always Knows

There are times when in our own lives we don’t we really know what to pray for. There are times in the lives of others and when we hear about situations and really don’t know how or what to pray. Thankfully, when we don’t know what to pray, there is someone who does. Paul reminds us in reminds us in Romans 8:26 that when we don’t know how or what to pray the Holy Spirit does and ‘He intercedes for the saints.’ The saints are not just a special group of select people but are all of us who are … Continue reading

How to Overcome Fear

Fear can have a debilitating effect in our lives. It is easy when we look at the world around us and the things that are happening to give in to fear -to be fearful of what tomorrow holds. But there is a way out. Last week we looked at some of the wisdom and practical advice in Romans 8. And is it Romans we turn again to read how to deal with fear. It is by not going back and giving in to the path we were on before- the path of sin, the old life. We have moved on … Continue reading

Never Too Old!

Some people use age as an excuse to opt out of becoming involved and helping others. Our local paper recently ran a story about an 87 year old man, Cyril Brown. Unlike some today, his main focus has never been on earning a living and looking after his own best interests. Rather, his has been a life of helping and serving others. Currently he is a volunteer who delivers for Meals on Wheels. Ironically, he is older than some of the people he is delivering meals too. When not delivering meals, he spends his time doing other odd jobs to … Continue reading
