Power Personified

This passage in Mark 6:45-56 shows us so much about what underpinned Jesus ministry. Let's see what we can learn from it that will help us in our Christian life.

After He sent his disciples away to Bethsaida and dismissed the crowd, Jesus went up the the mountain to pray, verses 45-46. This reliance on prayer and time spent talking to and listening His Heavenly Father undergirded all Jesus did. Jesus often drew apart to spend time alone in prayer. If Jesus needed to pray, how much more do we?

Though Jesus was alone on the land, he saw the difficulties the disciples were having in the boat on the lake, verses 47 and 48. He knew of their difficulties because He had sent them into that situation, so that they might learn something more of Him through the experience. You are not alone in your experience. Jesus knows what you are going through. Have you considered that Jesus knows all about what is happening to you and has placed you there in the middle of it, so you might experience Him in a new way?

Jesus came to them walking on the lake, verse 48. He did not come to them in a manner which they expected. The disciples cried out in fear, verse 50 Sometimes He comes to us in unexpected ways. How do we react?

Jesus' words and physical presence in the boat overcame their fear as well as the elements, verses 50-51. We have His words and presence with us to help us overcome fears as we go through our current situation.

Even though they were his disciples and had spent a lot of time with Him, they still had not understood about the loaves and the fishes. The bible tells us their hearts 'were hardened,' verse 52. How often are our hearts hardened so that we shut ourselves off from the lessons Jesus would teach us?

There was great excitement as people recognized Jesus and spread the news about Him. Do we have that same excitement as we tell others of Jesus?
