Moving Day

Moving is always a lot of work, I should know, I’ve lived in more places than I can count as an adult. It is even more overwhelming as a single mom. Everything is work, from beginning to end, there are no short cuts, no easy ways out, you just have to bite the bullet and do it. In my many moves I have found that being organized is key, especially with kids. Everyone laughs at me because all of my boxes have a number and a room name on them and there is a master list which lists everything in … Continue reading

Unpacking

Normally I am really good at getting things clean and organized. The last time we moved I was seven months pregnant and I had the house in order in two days flat. The difficulty with a first trimester move is the lack of energy and nausea that tends to come with it. We also have three levels now instead of just one. While this helps keep items more segregated, running up and down stairs isn’t my idea of fun. The first room that needs to be organized is the kitchen. My mom graciously offers to help me get the kitchen … Continue reading

Moving Part II

Here we are in the midst of packing, loading the truck, and cleaning. Today is our last day to get everything done before we begin the long trek back to the Midwest. We’ve made a lot of progress yesterday. Most of the large items are out of the house and over a dozen large totes filled, labelled, and loaded. I spent a good portion of the evening cleaning and getting the things left in the house organized into piles to go in the truck. This small act of organization really gave me piece of mind as it became apparent that … Continue reading

Preparations for Moving

Moving is never an easy or stress-free experience. My husband and I have moved several times in our five short years of marriage. The last time we moved I was in my third trimester. The move was a fairly simple in-town move to a larger residence. A couple of my husband’s colleagues helped us with the heavy items. While lifting heavy objects is very hard and strenuous. I find the actually packing to be the most stressful aspect of moving. Once again I am pregnant, although only in my first trimester and once again we are planning our next move. … Continue reading

Moving Day

As much as I hate moving, I’m pretty sure my baby hates it more. My husband and I believe in attachment parenting, so she’s spent most of her life in some sort of sling or wrap. She likes it, we like it, and everyone is happy. However, we’re moving in less than a week, and when there’s an apartment to pack up, the rules change. When I’m moving heavy boxes and lifting things off of high shelves, I don’t feel safe having her in tow. For that reason, she’s been spending a lot of time entertaining herself. She’s very good … Continue reading

Goal Setting and Marriage

It’s always interesting to hear or read about other people and what works in their marriages. We can often pick up tips and ideas we can incorporate to improve our own. Yesterday I read a blog by the wife of a footballer, talking about goals, not the goals scored in football although that did come into it a little, but setting goals in your life. Goal setting is something she said she learned from her husband who is big on the idea of goal setting. It gave me something to think about. Often when we get married we set goals … Continue reading

Things to Do before Signing Contracts and before Moving Day

This is the last in my series about moving and buying another house with your spouse. Before you sign a contract, check how far it is to schools, shopping, doctors and transport facilities. Check out how long it will take you and your spouse to get to work and to church. After you have found a house and area you like, come back a few times at night at varying times of the day to scope out the neighborhood and make sure all is quiet. If you know people in that area talk to them about how they find things. … Continue reading

10 Tips When You’re Moving House

You know you’re moving, you’ve decided to put your house up for sale and followed some of the suggested guidelines on the previous blog, now what? Here are more guidelines to make it easier. 1. Decide whether you are going to use a real estate agent or try and sell privately. I admit we’ve only ever sold using an agent. Friends have sold privately and to me it sounded like a lot of hassle. I also see houses put up for sale privately that often then have to be out in an agent’s hands. 2. Make sure you factor all … Continue reading

Moving House

Moving house, I heard recently on the radio, can be as stressful as divorce or the death of a spouse. It can be a time of emotional upheavals, depending on how long you have been in the one place and how attached to it you are. But it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. It can be a good opportunity to take stock in your life and in your marriage. We have moved a lot of in our marriage, the last being just over two years ago. It didn’t quite go according to our plan and there were times … Continue reading

Stress and Anxiety Dreams

The brain is a wonderful, funny organ. It does so much for our bodies without any conscious effort! But sometimes, I wish it would find a different way to handle stress. When I’m really stressed, my dreams can get really weird. I have a few recurring dreams that pop up when the pressure’s on. The school dream. Usually, it’s the end of my senior year of high school and I realize that I’ve been skipping out on one class for the whole year. Maybe I’m scrambling to finish an extra credit project; maybe I’m so worried about other classes that … Continue reading
