Is Worry Creating Needless Drama In Your Life?

Worry certainly sounds like a negative activity, and it is, but when you’re immersed in it, worry feels like the most logical, positive direction. How else can you prevent bad things from happening – or be prepared to deal with them when they do – if you don’t worry about them first? Unfortunately, “bad” things are going to happen regardless of any amount of obsessive thinking you do trying to anticipate, prevent and prepare for them. All worry does is keep you living in a perpetual state of anxiety for no good reason at all, and what kind of a … Continue reading

How to Deal with Fears and Worry

We all have times when we are afraid. Years ago someone told me the antidote to fear is prayer. Certainly that has been proved true in my life time and time again. By nature, I admit I am a worrier. It seems to come naturally to me – the instinctive reaction. Therefore it takes a concerted effort to train myself not to worry but to hand the situation to God in prayer. Even then, there is always the temptation to take it back again. I’ve needed to learn to leave it with Him to work out and every time I … Continue reading

Coping with and Getting Through Worry

When it comes to parenting and family life, worry tends to come with the territory. I have been told that the worry doesn’t stop the moment the kids become adults either—it seems that we parents are susceptible to worrying about our children forever! I think there are ways to temper that worry and learn how to cope, though, and ways to get ourselves through those particularly long nights of worry and concern… If possible, it helps to try to keep things in perspective. While worry may come with the territory, we don’t have to let our imaginations run wild and … Continue reading

Overcoming Fear – Part 4

In recent blogs I’ve been looking at practical ways of overcoming fear. When fear grips us, the place to turn is to God’s Word. This is what we have done in a recent situation, where fear has been threatening my husband and me and trying to gain ascendancy. To help with this, my husband bought ‘Rick Warren’s Bible study methods -Twelve ways you can unlock God’s Word,’ from our local Christian book shop. As we flicked through deciding which of the twelve methods suggested, we found one titled the Topical Method of Bible Study. Considering the fears that had been … Continue reading

Overcoming Fear- Part 3

Do you ever feel afraid and feel that no-one else could understand? ‘Fearfulness is universal’ says writer, Alexis Wright, winner of the 2007 Miles Franklin Award. Often, rather than deal with our fears we push them to the back of our minds and try and pretend they don’t exist. It doesn’t work. Or it might work for a while but not for long. Fear can paralyze us. Stop us doing something. As we discovered in a recent blog, fear can pass down from one generation to the next unless we do something to stop the cycle. ‘Each of us has … Continue reading

Be A Cycle Breaker

Sometimes as a mother, I look at my children and try to imagine them as teenagers. Even harder is trying to imagine them as adults. Will they ever understand how much I love them? Will they hold on to the negative things I did as a mother instead of seeing me for who I was striving to be? I worry all the time about the impact that I am having on them long-term. I don’t know if it is because of my own childhood, my psychology background, or my worrying nature, but I struggle every day with overcoming my self. … Continue reading

Exploring The Secret World of Arrietty

Studio Ghibli’s latest animated feature, “The Secret World of Arrietty,” was released in American theaters by Disney earlier this year and on DVD/Blu-Ray on May 22. Now that I’ve bought and seen it, I can review this latest Japanese masterpiece brought to us by Disney. Well, no matter how much I love Ghibli’s work I think masterpiece might be pushing it a little far. However, “Arrietty” is a fun movie for all ages and definitely deserves a view by any fans of Miyazaki’s work. The renowned animator didn’t direct the film but he did write the screenplay, based on the … Continue reading

Is Depression Numbing Your Anxiety?

Years ago depression was considered a weakness, suffered by weak people, some citing a higher rate of depression among women. This chauvinistic, repressive attitude toward depression and its sufferers has been changing, allowing the depression to come out from under the cloak of shame and seek help for their illness. Depression shows itself through a prolonged period of sadness or anxiety. I have seen firsthand the link between anxiety and depression. The possibility for the chronically anxious person to become depressed is real, and the reasons can be compelling. Earlier I likened the anxious state to being constantly on red … Continue reading

No Two Depressions are Created Equal

Most people don’t start out in life intentionally headed toward depression. Life just takes you down that detour sometimes, for a whole host of reasons. Sometimes it’s a traumatic event that shakes your world and shatters your confidence. Sometimes it’s the cumulative effect of anxiety and fear about yourself and your future. Sometimes it’s the sheer weariness of never seeming to get on the right road to happiness. Sometimes it’s the constant criticism and negativity of the people you travel with. Sometimes it’s because no matter how fast you go, you can’t seem to outrun your past. Sometimes it’s because … Continue reading

Hand Your Anxiety to a Higher Power

All of the work we do at The Center for Counseling and Health Resources is based on a whole-person approach to treatment and recovery from anxiety and depression. This includes attention paid to the physical, mental, emotional and relational aspects of self, as well as the spiritual side, as referenced in the following excerpt from my book Overcoming Anxiety, Worry and Fear: Practical Ways to Find Peace. Anxieties have a way of lying to us about what is valuable and what is not. If you find you’re confused and need some guidance breaking out of anxiety’s black-and-white-world, if you find … Continue reading
