How to Deal with Fears and Worry

We all have times when we are afraid. Years ago someone told me the antidote to fear is prayer. Certainly that has been proved true in my life time and time again. By nature, I admit I am a worrier. It seems to come naturally to me – the instinctive reaction. Therefore it takes a concerted effort to train myself not to worry but to hand the situation to God in prayer. Even then, there is always the temptation to take it back again. I’ve needed to learn to leave it with Him to work out and every time I … Continue reading

How God Calmed Fears

Any woman who has ever been for a mammogram, knows the feelings it arouses and the waiting on tenterhooks till the letter saying all is clear arrives. Imagine this. You open the letter and read you are being called back for further X rays and tests. Your heart misses a beat or two. Your eyes blur. You decide you must have read it wrongly. But the words stay stubbornly the same. Yet there is a sense in which you are not surprised at all. Even though you have no symptoms, discovered no lumps or changes, there is a feeing of … Continue reading

Overcoming Fear – Part 4

In recent blogs I’ve been looking at practical ways of overcoming fear. When fear grips us, the place to turn is to God’s Word. This is what we have done in a recent situation, where fear has been threatening my husband and me and trying to gain ascendancy. To help with this, my husband bought ‘Rick Warren’s Bible study methods -Twelve ways you can unlock God’s Word,’ from our local Christian book shop. As we flicked through deciding which of the twelve methods suggested, we found one titled the Topical Method of Bible Study. Considering the fears that had been … Continue reading

Overcoming Fear- Part 3

Do you ever feel afraid and feel that no-one else could understand? ‘Fearfulness is universal’ says writer, Alexis Wright, winner of the 2007 Miles Franklin Award. Often, rather than deal with our fears we push them to the back of our minds and try and pretend they don’t exist. It doesn’t work. Or it might work for a while but not for long. Fear can paralyze us. Stop us doing something. As we discovered in a recent blog, fear can pass down from one generation to the next unless we do something to stop the cycle. ‘Each of us has … Continue reading

Overcoming Fear – Part 2

Fear can cripple us. Are you allowing it to cripple you? One way to deal with it is to confront the fear. This is what one young woman did after being attacked. Only lessons in self defense saved Nina Funnell from being raped while having a blade held to her throat. She could have let fear stop her from telling the police. Stop her from talking about it. Keep her hiding in her house. She chose not to, even though so far the police have not caught her attacker. Instead, she publicly came out and identified herself, as well as … Continue reading

Author Interview – Michele Ashman Bell, Part Three

Thanks for checking in with us as we continue our talk with Michele Ashman Bell, best-selling LDS women’s fiction author. Here are the links to parts one and two. Michele, of all your novels, do you have a favorite? I love my Vietnam series even though I’m still not sure why I wrote about a war and a country I knew nothing about. My favorite stories are those that show a person overcoming great odds and triumphing. I love stories of survival and beating the odds. That’s why my favorite book is “Without A Flaw.” I love the main character … Continue reading

Hand Your Anxiety to a Higher Power

All of the work we do at The Center for Counseling and Health Resources is based on a whole-person approach to treatment and recovery from anxiety and depression. This includes attention paid to the physical, mental, emotional and relational aspects of self, as well as the spiritual side, as referenced in the following excerpt from my book Overcoming Anxiety, Worry and Fear: Practical Ways to Find Peace. Anxieties have a way of lying to us about what is valuable and what is not. If you find you’re confused and need some guidance breaking out of anxiety’s black-and-white-world, if you find … Continue reading

Channeling Anxiety Through the Body: Rita’s Story

It’s challenging enough dealing with the anxiety that lives in our minds. But when it is channeled through the body – as it always is – anxiety works us over double time. Sometimes it manifests as a tightness in the gut, or clenching of the teeth or hands. Over time, though, anxiety takes a more dangerous toll on our physical sides, from ulcers and panic attacks, to high blood pressure and heart attacks. What’s worse is when we add fuel to the fire, treating our bodies in ways that only make anxiety worse. Rita knows this all too well. Promptly … Continue reading

Ousting Anxiety: 11 Steps to Taking Charge of Your Life

Those of us with high levels of anxiety generally respond in one of two ways. We either immerse ourselves in one “productive” task after another, or we do nothing at all. The root cause is the same – fear that we do not have control over our lives. When we scramble around manically marking things of our to-do lists, we are holding out hope that the more we get done, the closer we’ll be to control. And the more control we have, the closer we’ll be to relief from anxious thoughts and feelings. After all, once we have nothing left … Continue reading
