The Widow’s Might – Ann Bennion Brown

“The Widow’s Might” by Ann Bennion Brown is a compilation book for women who have lost their spouses. The title comes from the parable of the widow’s mite, reminding us of the poor woman who came in to pay her tithing and only donated two of the smallest pieces of money in existence at that time. She was ridiculed by the rich, who had donated quite a bit, but Christ said that her donation was worth more, because she had given all she possessed for the building up of the kingdom. With spelling the title “might” rather than “mite,” this … Continue reading

Tearing Down Walls and Starting New

One of the hardest things to come to grips with before I’d truly turned my life over to God is that God was really capable of changing me. I lacked the faith He would because I’d cried out to Him and didn’t initially see anything great take place. Perhaps the reason I wasn’t seeing change in my life was because I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ready to let go of my old life. Once I was ready, I was at a point where I wanted to throw everything down. This is exactly what God wanted and needed from me. Because … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Questioning Your Testimony

Although General Conference has thrown something of a cog into our regular Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson planning (pity whoever is conducting this month, as they didn’t have to prepare a lesson! Unfair!), you should be studying from the Spencer W. Kimball handbook. This week, we are reading Chapter 7, a beautiful lesson on Personal Testimony. As I started off by reading the first section, addressing moments from President Kimball’s life, I was touched by the experience his son had. While on his mission, young Elder Andrew Kimball would frequently be impressed to bear his testimony. Later, he would … Continue reading

Our Very Own Testimonies of Faith

I have been asked several times why I believe what I do. I know some people expect to hear that I have always known my faith because I grew up in church, or that I believe as I do because the Bible says it’s true. I’m much more of a skeptic than that! I, like many others want to know why things work. Unfortunately, if all we’re searching for is additional proof, it kind of defeats the point of faith. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things … Continue reading

Saying No to a Calling

In the church, I have to admit that I have been jaded in the past about callings. There have been times in my life where the Bishop barely knows us and has given us callings that I felt were too time intensive, and too much of a sacrifice for our family. But, with that being said, I do have a testimony that everything comes from the Lord for a reason, and I would never turn down a calling. When my husband was in graduate school, there was a time where I wanted to say no. But, my faith in the … Continue reading

Mary, Martha, and Betty Sue

We read in the Bible about two sisters named Mary and Martha, and their brother, Lazarus. The members of this family were close personal friends of our Savior’s and He came to visit them whenever he was in Bethany. On one memorable visit, Mary sat at His feet while He taught the principles of everlasting life. Martha was busy in the kitchen, preparing the evening meal, and felt as though Mary should be helping her. When Martha spoke to Christ about this, we all remember His response, that Mary had chosen the better part. Women of the Church have thought … Continue reading

The Church is Still True

The Relief Society president told me I’m fat. The Cub Scout leader made fun of my son when he couldn’t remember the Cub Scout promise. The elders quorum president forgot to arrange for help when I moved and I ended up doing the whole thing myself. When I told the bishop about my marital problems, he said I needed to be more humble. My home teacher thinks I don’t have enough faith. In every branch of the Church, in every state, country and province in the world, you will find ward members that don’t get along. There will always be … Continue reading

In Memoriam – Religious Martyrs

This week, much has been said about those who have died to preserve our freedom. How grateful I am for those courageous men and women who have put their lives on the line to keep me free. I can’t say enough about our fallen heroes, and those who risk their lives every day even now, including firemen, police officers, and all those who endanger themselves so I might enjoy peace of mind. As I’ve thought about how truly blessed I feel, my mind wandered to those who have given their lives so that we might have religious freedom. The first, … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 13:41-42, 1 Nephi 14:1-2

I’ve slowed down our progress through the Book of Mormon in order to allow the Gospel Doctrine class to pull ahead. The class is covering different aspects of the scriptures than my analysis, so hopefully, we’ll arrive at a well-rounded investigation of the scriptures without too much repetition. When we left off, the angel was speaking to Nephi of the need for men to come unto Christ. Speaking of those men, he says: 41. And they must come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 12:11-18

Nephi is beholding a vision that is shown to him by the hand of the angel of the Lord. He has seen the coming of the Savior, born of a virgin, and he has seen that Lamb slain for the sins of the world. He has seen the wars that will break out between his seed and the seed of his brethren, and he has seen that Christ will come to the New World and choose out twelve righteous men to be his apostles. 11. And the angel said unto me: Look! And I looked, and beheld three generations pass … Continue reading
