Single Mothers Seminar

Last night I attended a single mothers seminar. I had been looking forward to it all week because I have been looking into some ways to make some money from home so I can keep Logan in daycare as little as possible. I also thought it would be a good way to connect with other single moms in the area. Well it was one of those days. It seemed like the entire universe was combining against me to keep me from making it to this seminar! My mother had agreed to watch my son for me, I even left on … Continue reading

Guard What You Share With Others

This past week I was able to attend a group for women at my church. Our pastor’s wife did a teaching on marriage that was very inspiring. At the end you participated in a table discussion with the ladies you were sitting with. There was a list of questions that were designed to get you thinking positively about your spouse. However one woman in particular seemed insistent on dominating the conversation and it wasn’t very positive. She was going on and on about all the wrong things her husband was doing. Now it’s not that I don’t have sympathy for … Continue reading

Kiddie Birthday Parties: What Happened to Gift Opening?

If you were one of the nearly 10 million viewers who tuned into to watch the season premiere of “Jon and Kate Plus 8,” then you may have observed a striking fact: Each child that was invited to the sextuplets’ fifth birthday party brought along SIX presents. Imagine being the parent of a young birthday guest: Kid: Mommy, I got invited to Alexis/Hannah/Aaden/Collin/Leah/Joel’s birthday party. Yeah! Mother: I’m sorry honey, but we just refinanced our home so we can pay for food and water. I don’t think we have enough money leftover to buy six birthday presents… (Under her breath) … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

U.S. Runner Says Support of his Adopted Country and Family is “As Good as Gold”

After reading about the athlete who refused his bronze medal and declared this Olympics a failure because he’d wanted gold, and about other athletes who have been stripped of their medals, it’s refreshing to find an athlete who seems to have the true Olympic spirit and an appreciation of what’s important. Runner Lopez Lomong appears to have that spirit–toward the Olympic Games as well as toward his adopted family and country. “I came here for the pride and love of my country,” said Lomong. “I came here to try my best to represent the country and to be a great … Continue reading

Opening up to Others

Last week we looked out how to make a friends and how an acquaintance becomes a friend. A comment from one of our family members about finding it hard to open up to others, struck me. Can you relate to that? I can. Sometimes I have opened up to others thinking we were friends and then been left feeling hurt and foolish when the friendship never developed or my words were used against me. The fact is every time we open up to others we leave ourselves at risk of being hurt or rebuffed. But if we want to make … Continue reading

Best Opening Lyrics

Today, my husband sent me a link to Spinner magazine’s 25 Best Opening Lines. I love lists like this, but once I took a look at this one, the fact that I didn’t know some of the songs made me feel old. But, I will comment on the ones that I did know! 25. “You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar” –Human League’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’ Ah, the Human League. I always wanted my hair cut like the girls, sort of a Dorothy Hamill look with a rat-tail, which sounds atrocious now, but in 1981, it … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: And The Winner Is…

A lucky kid who has a very wealthy father. That’s who won the chance to play an extra in Will Ferrell’s new movie. Confused? In a previous blog I told you about Ferrell’s idea to auction off a role in his new flick in order to raise money for the Cancer for College foundation run by his former fraternity brother at the University of Southern California. The opening bid was $5,000 and Ferrell made the comment that getting $10,000 would be a wonderful achievement. Well, consider Ferrell officially blown away. The winning bid came in at $47,100 from a Dallas … Continue reading
