Misconceptions – Part 2

Misconceptions can affect us in the Christian life. Misconceptions can even cause us to give up on our faith. As a child I made a commitment to Christ. Sadly, either no-one explained to me at the time that I once I became a Christian I would not instantly become perfect and sinless. Or if they did, I never heard it. The result was that even through I read my bible, went to church, prayed and tried to live a Christian life, in my eyes I failed because I still sinned. This led me to conclude that it obviously hadn’t worked. … Continue reading

Putting God in a Box – Part 3

Jesus broke free of the misconceptions and ideas the Samaritan woman had as we saw in yesterday’s blog. It was just the Samaritan woman tried to put Him in a box. Even the disciples had trouble with Jesus, His teaching and the fact that He did not fit the image they had of the Messiah. Some turned from Jesus when His teaching was difficult and did not please them, John 6:66. This departure obviously affected Jesus for he turned to the twelve and asked whether they also wanted to leave him, verse 68. Peter answered, ‘Lord, to whom shall we … Continue reading

Dispelling Scrapbooking Misconceptions

Scrapbook classes always afford me a chance to get to hear what others are doing in scrapbooking and on their layouts. However in addition, they also afford me a chance to hear about the different ways people perceive scrapbooking and how they use it in their everyday lives. Recently at a basic scrapbooking class I taught, I met an older woman who wanted to find out what scrapbooking was all about. She was taking the class just to see how it could help her with her family genealogy. I think she took a lot more away from the class than … Continue reading

This past week on the families.com homeschooling blog, we talked about finances, responsibilities, and giftedness, truths and misconceptions. Here is the week in review for Feb 10 – Feb 16 2007. Attitudes Regarding State Adoptions: Part 2

In part one I shared some misconceptions and attitudes in regard to children adopted through the state. Here I’ll continue: Our child won’t have that ~ If you’re one of the few parents that gets your dream child that is beautiful, smart, fully compliant, then you best hit the slot machines as you are one lucky person! Parents who adopt older children especially are adopting not just the child, but the needs of the child that have to be addressed. Unfortunately, the state agency is not always aware of these needs prior to placement, either because they never got the … Continue reading

Attitudes Regarding State Adoptions: Part 1

The following is a list of attitudes and misconceptions people have about adoption usually prior to their placement. I don’t intend to discourage anyone, but it’s important for families to be realistic in expectation. Children aren’t puppies, they’re children! ~ There is nothing wrong with wanting to adopt and know you are giving your child a good home. It’s okay for you to feel good about what you’re doing. But if you’re going to have the attitude that you are “rescuing” this child, you are doing your family a great injustice. It gives implication to the child that they owe … Continue reading

Allstate Insurance Clarifies About Zodiac Signs

Recently, Allstate Insurance was talking about zodiac signs. It seems that what was supposed to be an amusing way to look at car insurance has led to a lot of confusion. In response, Allstate has issued a press release designed to clarify some things. My best guess is that Allstate Insurance was just trying to find an entertaining way to catch people’s attention. One of the less controversial newsworthy items of late involves the zodiac signs. There used to be twelve, but a thirteenth sign has recently been added. As a result, the birth dates that had been previously assigned … Continue reading

Reassuring Kids in Times of Disaster

Even if you don’t let your kids watch the news, they likely know about the earthquake in Haiti through all the fund-raising projects going on (for more information about children’s fundraising projects, click here) and from hearing people talk about it. Maybe your child was afraid that they would be in an earthquake. Maybe you could get out of it by saying you don’t live in an earthquake zone. I couldn’t say that, so I’d have to go into detail about houses being built better, our earthquake kit having all the necessities in it, and having police and fire personnel … Continue reading
