7 Marks of the Mature Christian – Part 2

My last blog gave 2 marks of the mature Christian. Here are the remaining 5 Marks of a mature Christian. 3. Prayer for others – This is what Paul did. He prayed for others, and what we need to do too. If you don’t have a prayer partner or are not part of a prayer covenant, can I suggest you do something about that? It’s a great help to your Christian life. It is interesting that Paul didn’t pray for them to be happy or to be healed from disease. He prayed for them to grow in their faith and … Continue reading

7 Marks of the Mature Christian

What do you want to be when you grow up? As a child do you remember being asked that question? I do. What about your children? What are you hopes and dream for them? What do you want them to be when they grow up? Sometimes you will hear parents say, ‘I don’t care what they do; I just want my kids to be happy.’ And if we’re honest. We’d probably say we want that for ourselves too – to be happy. Growing up is hard, harder for some of us than others, it sometimes seems. Growing up as a … Continue reading

Mature Christians

You can be a Christian your whole life and still not be mature in your faith. Fact is we will spend our whole lives with the opportunity to grow and still not have achieved the perfection of Christ. Thankfully God isn’t looking for perfect people, just hearts that long to know Him and follow Him. I’ve been a Christian a long time but I would not necessarily consider myself mature in faith. I am impressionable and vulnerable to temptation that can cause me to backslide into old habits. I want to grow and mature but the truth is, I lack … Continue reading

Before Getting On Your High Horse

At the moment a well known Australian Christian is voluble in what they are saying. Now I don’t want to go into who this person is and disparage them, but I do want us to think about the issues we become involved in. This person has been so voluble about so many issues and some of them pretty trivial over the years, that he has lost all credibility. To most people it’s a case of, ‘he’s raving on again.’ If all we are doing is turning people off, so they don’t listen at all, how is this helpful to God’s … Continue reading

What Makes a Person One God Can Use?

Do you want to be a person God can use? What qualifications would you need to have to be someone God can use? I’m going to suggest there are five qualities you need. 1. Willingness Willingness to be used by God in the way He chooses. Sometimes it may dovetail in with what you think your gifts may be. But that may not always be the case. Sometimes he may call you to step out of your comfort zone into area you don’t feel equipped for, so you absolutely have to depend on Him for everything you need. 2. Teachability … Continue reading

Unlocking a Bible Passage – part 1

You’ve decided you need to get more serious about your reading of God’s Word and applying it to your life. But how do you go about it? One way I learned years ago, when I was a discussion leader in a BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) class, was a technique known as homiletics. This is one way of unlocking the meaning of a passage. Over the years I have used other methods for learning more of God’s Word but I have found this method effective and keep coming back to it. So here, as I remember it, are the principles involved: … Continue reading

Blackout

Last night we had a blackout. I woke to find the overhead fan and the clock next to the bed off and the room in complete darkness with no light coming in from the street light outside. Blackout, I thought and wondered how long it would go on for. This was at 3.30am. My husband said the electricity had been off since midnight. I started to think of the fridge and freezer filled with food and hoped the electricity would not be off too long. Since there was nothing I could do about it, instead of worrying about food spoiling … Continue reading

Unused Gifts

Have you ever given a person a gift and never seen them wear it or never seen them use it? I know I have. And it hurts to think it is not appreciated. When buying a gift for those I care about I put a lot of thought and effort into buying something I think the person would like. To never see it worn or used or displayed makes me feel that time and effort of choosing it was wasted. I imagine the Lord must feel like that too when He gives us gifts and they are not used. The … Continue reading

Eliminating Illiteracy

In England, Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary stated families spend four hours a day watching TV. “If they read to their children for a tenth of that time, we could practically eliminate illiteracy,” he said. Twenty four minutes -it’s not a lot of time over the course of a day. Let’s go one step further. Imagine the results if you read to your children from the bible for that time or even half of it. What impact would it have not only on their lives but on your own? For years our family had a time of bible reading just … Continue reading

A Friend Who Believes in You

Are you the kind of friend who supports and encourages others? Are you a friend who builds up or one who is negative and tears people down? The definition of a friend I read which appealed to me is this – ‘A friend is one who believes in you before you believe in yourself.’ I wonder if you’ve had experienced that. I have. Years ago when as a mature age student I started a university course, the Australian government had a policy that anyone could go to university with no fees to pay. This originally started as an initiative of … Continue reading
