Parents Needed More Than Ever

I used to think the ideal years for being a stay-at-home mom was when the kids are very young, before they ventured off to school.  These are the years where so much forming and shaping of their lives takes place. Yet I have come to see another stage in life to be just as important.  It is during the teen years.  So often parents see this as their time…after all, teens are independent and don’t seem to need mom and dad as much as they used to. Whether the issue is staying home or just being available, too many parents … Continue reading

A Much Needed Family Outing Part II

Once we were inside the Mars exhibit, we began to learn about the many different of what would be required to go to Mars.  We learned about space toilets that have to work without gravity.  We learned about the terrain of Mars and its many “dust storms.” We discovered that both of our children would be too light to be able to walk on Mars.  We learned about how all the things required for a civilization to flourish on Mars would get to Mars. We learned about tight living quarters and dehydrated food.  We learned more than we really wanted … Continue reading

Special Needs Blog Week in Review – June 24 – 30, 2012

Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review brings you a quick summary of each of the blogs that were posted here in the past seven days. It makes it easier for you to find out about the ones that you might have missed. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on June 25, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “Weekend Edition Sunday”. The episode was called “Planes, Patience, and Slightly Kid-Friendlier Security”. This is a good one to listen to for parents who will be traveling by plane with their children this … Continue reading

Supreme Court Health Care Ruling – Just the Facts

Today, June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court revealed its decision about the Affordable Care Act, (which some call “Obamacare”). Those who are upset by this decision are likely to spread misinformation about it. This blog has just the facts about what the Supreme Court decided today. The Affordable Care Act, or ACA, was signed by President Obama on March 23, 2010. The full name of this series of health reform regulations is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It is sometimes shortened into PPACA. Many people refer to this series of health reform laws as “Obamacare”. All of these … Continue reading

I Just Want To Scream

As a single parent I’m learning every day. The biggest lesson I’ve learned, and the one I struggle with most is that I don’t always have to be strong. It’s ok to admit that I need help. This so hard for me, as I think it is for most single parents. After experiencing a failed marriage we feel like failures. That thought haunts us so we feel like we always have to have it together when it comes to parenting our children. Admitting that you need help is almost like admitting failure and when it comes to our kids, we … Continue reading

Just Breathe

Every day can feel like a race against time. There is so much to do and only you to do it. If I sit and talk on the phone for fifteen minutes I feel like I’ve wasted time so I’m usually multi tasking while on the phone. I can cook, clean, fold laundry, work on a craft project, surf the net looking for blog ideas all while talking on the phone. It’s not a skill that can go on my resume but it’s one I’ve needed for the last nine years of being a single parent. There just isn’t time … Continue reading

The Claims Adjuster Called About the Puddle on the Floor

This all started with a puddle on the floor. It was in the corner of a room, and not under a window. My best guess was that the water came in through the wall while it was raining really hard outside. Our next step, as we work through the claims process, is for the claims adjuster to come over and take a look at things. If you haven’t been following my blogging about the puddle on the floor, allow me to quickly catch you up. First, I noticed a puddle on the floor in the corner of a bedroom that … Continue reading

Don’t Just Pile It, Organize It!

My daughter moved into her new place over the weekend and as much as I’m going to miss her I’m not going to miss the mess in her room! Now that I have this big old house all to myself it’s time to do some reorganizing and redecorating. I helped with the move, Hailey and I actually took most of the boxes over on Wednesday and then the furniture got moved on Saturday. Today before the Super Bowl I went over to help them get the rest of the boxes unpacked and organize the apartment. I’m an organizational freak. I … Continue reading
