Are We Reliant on Techology to Parent?

When I first got my iPhone I was amazed at all the apps for children. There are hundreds of thousands of games and educational apps for children as young as three. I thought it seemed illogical to have a cell phone with so many apps for a child too young to have a cell phone. Now, I realize these apps are also on the iPad but again how many children need an iPad? Before I go on I must say that I recognize that the educational apps on the iPhone and iPad can greatly benefit children with learning disabilities. My … Continue reading

We Can’t Change Our Children

Out of all the many lessons I am learning on this journey of parenthood, one that has especially been hitting close to home lately is the fact that I cannot change my children. Nor should I really desire to. Actually, this lesson began early on when my oldest son was about 4 years old. My husband is a sports fanatic. He not only enjoys watching sports but playing as well. So when our firstborn was a son, he assumed they would share the same interests. As soon as he was of age to join T-ball, we signed him up. My … Continue reading

Exploring “My Weirder School”

For someone who didn’t care much for pencils, books and teachers’ dirty looks growing up, I’m not exactly sure how I birthed a school-loving bookworm. Not only does my second grader enjoy attending school, she also loves reading books about kids and their adventures in the halls of higher learning. That said, I suppose I shouldn’t be the least bit surprised that my 7-year-old is addicted to Dan Gutman’s silly series, My Weirder School. The collection of creative craziness features characters that will crack you up and leave you wanting more. In this case, you’re in luck because Gutman shows … Continue reading

What Do Home Based Professionals Do During a Power Outage?

For the past two days, I have been in New Hampshire. An early snow storm a few days ago knocked out power in many parts of the state, including the town where we were staying. Ironically, the places that were hardest hit by the wintry weather were the places that were the furthest south. The reason for that is that not only did not much snow make it all the way north – I drove home to Vermont today and arrived to find almost no snow in our yard – the snow that did fall was heavy and wet. That … Continue reading

Why People Gain Weight After Stopping Atkins

After being on the Atkins diet for most of the Summer, I am at the point where I am seriously considering quitting it. One cannot stay on a diet forever. The problem is that I have heard that people tend to gain their weight right back after quitting the Atkins diet. Why does that happen? Dieting is not easy. It requires people to dramatically change their eating habits. Most people resist change, even if they know that it will benefit them. Dieting forces people to think about each and every food that they are considering eating, which can be quite … Continue reading

When Prayers Aren’t Answered

The bible tells us ‘you do not have because you do not ask,’ James 4:2. But what about hen we have asked and still don’t see an answer? That has been my experience recently as I have battled with excruciating back pain over a number of weeks and it is still here. I’ve asked, and plenty of others have also asked on my behalf, so why isn’t God answering? I’m sure Paul must’ve asked the same question when he asked the Lord repeatedly for healing of whatever problem he had, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9. God chose not to answer by healing … Continue reading

How We Found $760 Last Week

Dismayed because our newly built and delicate basic emergency fund got hit again last month, my brilliant husband found us more than $760 that helped us get back on track. As you may know, we have started taking the Dave Ramsey Financial Freedom course. One of the first steps that he recommends is to fund the start of an emergency fund. This way, you don’t have to worry about getting into debt if an emergency should occur. The problem was, is that as soon as we funded this, it got hit for the whole amount, leaving us back to square … Continue reading
