The world says that some lies are ok, as long as it keeps someone from being hurt. However, the Bible clearly teaches that lying is wrong and makes no distinction between a little lie and a big lie. In Colossians 3:9 the Bible states: "Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices." One of the most basic values and traits that we should have and exhibit is honesty. Children should be taught to be honest always starting when they are young. Parents should continually reinforce the idea that honesty is a necessity in life. Honesty will help communication be fluid and effective. When a person has proven to be honest, a deep trust can easily be developed. When people know that they do not have to second guess something that you are saying, they will hopefully be more open and honest toward you. Honesty is a characteristic of a good, true friend. A true friend will always be willing to be honest with you, even if being honest brings pain. Proverbs 27:6 states: "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy." However, a Christian's honesty must lie deeper than just saying the truth to others. Christians must have an honest heart for all the things that they do. Proverbs 15:3 states: "The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good." The Lord knows whether the things that someone does are truly out of a good heart, or rather just for show. This attitude can be seen in Colossians 3:22-24: "Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."
