Holiness vs. Legalism: Drawing the Line? My Conclusionby Melissa J | More from this Blogger 18 Apr 2007 12:24 PM In part 1 I shared my struggle with drawing the line between holiness and legalism. I touched on the way we dress and music. Then in part 2, I talked a bit about churches which seem to miss the mark as well as celebration of holidays and who we choose to associate with. I've by no means come to a final conclusion in my heart. I don't know that I ever will because God is constantly growing me. Once I think I have something figured out, God unveils something else for me and I realize I am still just a child in my Christian walk. What I have learned along the way is that God doesn't expect me to have all the answers. He does want me to seek Him in faith. Honestly I think the difference between holiness and legalism is in our hearts. Our heart determines whether we're doing what we do in faith to please God or to become self-righteous to bring glory to ourselves. There are a few examples I have to share along these lines.
Scripture reference is quoted from the NKJV. Relevantchristian tags User Comments Valorie Delp (49340) 18 Apr 2007 07:55 PMThis was a really good series MJ. It seems to me as well that another aspect of this is what we do for the sake of others. There are numerous behaviors and/or "rules" that we adhere to simply bc of who we minister to and how our actions might reflect Christ to them. strongman (11) 22 Apr 2007 07:25 AMVery well put, MJ. Just as Paul translated his presentation, "became a local" so to speak, to open hearts and ears, we must translate our presentation as long as it does not remove honoring and respecting God or the commandments that He said are most important. Whenever we refer to Legalism we are referring to an adherence to The Law or other man-made religious rules. With Christ's death and resurrection, we have moved into the next stage of Grace, but Grace does not remove the rules that give Honor, Reverence, and Glory to Him, the Fear of the Lord. Romans 6:1ff says, "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" Christ is the Law fulfilled, not removed. Community Tags holiness, legalism, religion Discuss this article
