Time to Stock up on Peanut Butter

There is something a bit sticky about peanut butter. In fact, get ready for sticker shock. That is because peanut butter and other products that are made with peanuts could be going up in price as much as 40 percent by the end of this month. Peanut butter is such a staple in our home. The kids literally eat it up, and we go through a lot of jars in any given year. It is a great source of protein for my kids, and I don’t even mind the extra ‘good” fat, since they are on the thin side. I … Continue reading

National Organic Harvest Month

I am going to ignore that today is National Coffee Ice Cream day and focus on it being National Organic Harvest Month. I love the word “harvest.” It reminds me of apple orchards and pumpkin patches. I love purchasing produce from local farmers this time of year. I also love making fun food from apples and pumpkins. I am blessed enough to live by several apple orchards and pumpkin patches that deliver quality organic produce. If you cannot visit a local orchard or farm this time of year make sure to stop by the organic section of your grocery store. … Continue reading

Halloween or Harvest Cookie Pops

We spotted a version of cookies on a stick recently at our school festival, and ever since then, my kids have been asking to make them. Since Halloween is coming up this week, I better get going. This sounds like a good bit of cooking to do on Friday after school. I bet all of the neighborhood kids will want to join in as well. An easy way to make cookie pops is to use a basic sugar cookie dough. Sugar cookie dough is easy to cut into fun shapes and easy to decorate. Plus, the dough will accept a … Continue reading

Fall Harvest Apple Meatloaf

Did you go apple picking this weekend? We went about a week ago and I’m still only about halfway through the bushel (about 42 pounds) we collected. Needless to say, it’s all apples all the time around here. Preparing apple dishes morning, noon and night has forced me to dig deep into my recipe archives. Last night I came across two meatloaf recipes that call for apples, though I’ve only experimented with one and that was way back in college when I was living with a girl who was majoring in Food Science. In any event, if you are looking … Continue reading

Stuffing Summer’s Harvest

I consider myself very fortunate that despite not having a very green thumb my home is rarely without homegrown produce in the summertime. My friend and former colleague has a gigantic garden and generously shares the fruits of her labor every couple of weeks. This week we got to share in her bumper crop of green bell peppers. Consequently, I have been scouring my recipe books looking for pepper recipes. (After all, there’s only so many times I can add fresh bell peppers to salads without getting tired of doing so.) The peak season for green bell peppers falls between … Continue reading

Primary Time: Celebrating Spring

Spring is such a wonderful time to spend with your children. It is a great time to enjoy nature and teach about Heavenly Father’s love for us as shown through the beautiful world around us. It is a great time to teach your children about planting a garden and how to care for it. This is a great activity, because you can apply it in many different ways to your home evening lessons and dinner discussions throughout the month. First you can compare the seed to faith, and read Alma 32 with your children. Then as a family you can … Continue reading

Turkey Time Travel

Welcome to November. It’s the first day of the second to the last month of the year. Thanksgiving is exactly three weeks away. And you know what that means… let the travel nightmares begin. Thanksgiving is undeniably one of the busiest travel times of the year. However, not everyone is loading up the family to go over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house for a lavish turkey spread. Some folks use the extended holiday weekend to go skiing, while others take their family reunions on the road and let hotel chefs whip up their Thanksgiving meal. If … Continue reading

Happy Halloween (or Harvest!)

Whichever you celebrate, if you celebrate this date, I hope you have a happy one! My younger kids were excited as they rushed off to school, treats in hand, to share during their fall parties today. Many schools don’t have Halloween parties any more, and some no longer allow kids to dress up in costumes for Halloween either. Our school has a fall party but no costumes. I have even heard of several small towns in this area that would like to ban trick-or-treating altogether as well. It wouldn’t really bother me, but I know some would miss it. I’m … Continue reading
