Freedom of Speech

If you haven’t heard about the Chick-fil-a controversy, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Chick-fil-a is a Christian based company that supports the biblical definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman. More importantly than what they believe or what I believe is, what are our children hearing? What do they believe? As a single mother I’ve had a fair amount of control over what Hailey is exposed to. I censor TV, movies, books, social media, to protect her. I’m not trying to protect her from differing opinions or lifestyles, once she leaves my home she … Continue reading

The Freedom That Comes with Digital Photography

Does anyone still use a traditional film camera these days? I’m sure some professional shooters and a few die-hards cling tightly to their trusty picture-taking tools, but for the most part, the industry has gone digital and most of us have followed without complaint. Personally, I don’t have a single complaint, especially since I was never fond of toting around dozens of rolls of extra film for my bulky point-and-shoot that never quite fit into my pocket or purse. I also dreaded waiting days to find out if the photos I snapped were worth saving. According to a new study, … Continue reading

Easter Freedom

My daughter and I have always been exceptionally close. I chock it up to the hours and hours she spent attached to my breast while she was an infant. And by hours I mean days. Actually, months. Okay, years. The kid nursed for the first two-and-a-half years of her life. My bosom buddy is six now and breastfeeding has been replaced with quality time doing other things together, such as reading, playing tennis, taking hikes and playing with Barbie’s urinating pups. Whereas my daughter is in full-day school this year, I still pepper our playtime with little lessons, including stranger … Continue reading

Judge Rules Insurance Requirement Does Not Violate Religious Freedom

A federal judge has decided that the requirement for all American’s to purchase health insurance, (or pay a fine), does not violate religious freedom. The judge has dismissed the lawsuit, and says that the Supreme Court will need to settle the constitutional issues. Add this to the list of court cases that were filed in response to the controversial mandatory insurance requirement. This lawsuit was filed by the American Center For Law and Justice, which is a Christian group, founded by evangelist Pat Robertson. The group filed the lawsuit on the behalf of a small group of five American citizens. … Continue reading

Christianity Leaves No Room for Hate

God is love. He is not hate. So, it is amazing to me, how some individuals can justify their actions of hate in the name of Christianity. I recently read an article on CNN.com that you can find here where an extremist, radical “church” (and I use those quotations on purpose) are going to protest the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards for “issues related to her personal life”. Whatever that means. The article goes on to say how this church has protested at funerals before. They have protested at funerals of fallen soldiers claiming that these soldiers were punished by God. … Continue reading

The Price of Freedom

Freedom is a word bandied around a lot these days. People want freedom to be themselves, which means to some people not having to abide by rules made by others. They want freedom from parental control, freedom from personal responsibility, and freedom from commitment. But freedom usually comes at a price as David found out. Since he was king David thought he had the freedom to do what he liked and disobey God’s commands about adultery. But what a price it ended up demanding. It resulted in him getting deeper and deeper into a web of sin, lies and subterfuge … Continue reading

For the Last Time, Homeschoolers are Not Strictly Conservative Christian

Maybe this won’t be the last time that I state this, but it must be said. Homeschoolers are not strictly Conservative Christians. We are not blindly motivated to separate and cloister out kids from others in a blind effort to keep our kids innocent, and protect them from the heathens. Sure when homeschooling first became popular, that was the goal of many, but the vast majority of homeschoolers now come from every walk of like imaginable. Sure, at one time, about 15 years ago, most homeschoolers that you encountered were Conservative Christians, and most homeschooling was religion based. But, even … Continue reading

Debt vs. Financial Freedom

Recent studies have shown more and more Americans are paying off their credit card debt. However, conflicting reports are showing Americans averaging several thousands of dollars in debt; many of these people spending more in a year than they actually make. My husband and I stayed on the rollercoaster of credit card debt for more than ten years until we took the plunge and paid them off. I recall several times we charged our groceries and years ago, even charging our rent. God has not intended for us to live beyond our means. He has promised, as with the birds … Continue reading

Non-Christian Memorials

I think one of the hardest places to be present for emotionally is a funeral for someone who died likely having rejected Christ as their savior. Unlike with the death of a believer, you can’t with an honest heart comfort someone with the fact the person is in heaven with God where one day they might be reunited together. Though the funeral for a non-believer can leave an added sadness, there really is a tactful and respectful way to remember the person and even turn the situation at hand to bring glory to God. Realize we really don’t know what … Continue reading

Blogging Your Baby

In 2005, I received a beautiful journal, complete with leather covering, as a Christmas present from my wife. She bought it for me because I mentioned that I wanted to write a bit about my experiences as a father and have a conversation with my daughter. I did not begin to make entries until May of 2006, and they were sporadic at best. Then within a month or two I had stopped completely. I stared at it every day on my dresser, but the guilt was not enough to pick it up and write. How lazy can I possibly be? … Continue reading
