Facing Your Fears

We all have different fears throughout our lives. After a divorce it seems that many of those fears are intensified. I was deathly afraid of another marriage. My first marriage had failed miserably and I couldn’t bear the thought of going through that pain again. Ultimately I knew that I wanted to be able to have a family again, but I wasn’t sure I was ready to feel the vulnerability that would come with that. I wasn’t ready to run the risk of that kind of rejection again. My divorce had taken such a toll on my self-esteem, I wasn’t … Continue reading

Preparing Yourself for the Death of a Parent

Many people fear the death of a much-loved parent and wonder how they will cope when the event arrives. After all, losing a mother or a father is a once in a lifetime occurrence since we are only given one parent. That parent may be a birth parent or a much loved step-parent who took over when our biological parent was unavailable for a variety of reasons. Whatever, the case, it is a difficult milestone in our lives to lose a parent. Everyone copes with this event in different ways – not all of them healthy. But to help minimize … Continue reading

Fear of Death

In the forums we have been discussing fears. Beth recently wrote a blog about people’s fear of death. At the time I suggested ‘To have assurance of a life beyond death makes all the difference in the way it is approached.’ Beth wasn’t convinced ‘Possibly so, but I know many people who would consider themselves to be religious and yet cannot face talking about their own mortality. I guess it is often a case of “everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die!” Yet I know some people who have their funeral all planned, right down to … Continue reading

Coping with Death

We all have to cope with death. As the saying goes: “No one gets out of this world alive!” We know it must inevitably happen yet we are often not educated or prepared for it when it does come. We cope with the death of loved ones largely by avoiding its certainty for as long as possible, and hope that when the time comes we will somehow muddle through it. There is probably nothing in life we prepare for less, and yet there’s nothing in life that is more inevitable. When you think about it, it’s a funny way to … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Sep 3-9

Happy Monday! With the passing of Labor Day, the inevitable end of summer is drawing yet nearer. Maybe you were busy last week taking a late summer vacation, or perhaps you were adjusting to the back-to-school grind, and missed portions of the Pets Blog. Never fear, Aimee and I are here with a review of what we wrote on: Monday, September 3 Ah, Labor Day. Ever since 1999 I’ve never viewed them quite the same. Then came the summer of 2004, where Murphy and Kitty and a hurricane name Frances had a lot of fun. Tuesday, September 4 In memory … Continue reading

Dealing with Death

My children had to deal with a new, difficult experience this week. We had all gone out together on a family trip, and when we returned home, my son made a discovery that was going to be very disturbing to our children. He came out from his room, and told my wife and I that one of his turtles looked funny. My wife and I exchanged concerned glances. He has been the proud owner of two red eared slider turtles, but ever since we had bought them, one turtle had never eaten very much, nor had it grown at all. … Continue reading

My Life as a Pets Blogger, Part II: Oh, The Tales I Hear

In Part I I talked about how I’ve come to claim myself as a writer via my Pets Blogging position with Families.com. The responses are very different than they once used to be when I simply said, “I’m a writer.” Is My Pet Normal? Take last week when I went to get my haircut for instance. Once the hairstylist heard I wrote about pets, she did what many do: assumed I’m some sort of expert. Before I knew it she was confiding in me about her cat Seymour. She started with anecdotes about him playing fetch. I’ve heard of cats … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jul 30 – Aug 5

Goodbye July, hello the hot, hot heat of August. Things were not too hot last week in the Pets Blog. Aimee and I tried to keep things cool. Although we did sort of get off on a morbid tangent at one point during the week. (I should say I did, in respect to the matter of pet’s dying.) Happily we also covered plenty of other, less sad, topics too. Monday, July 30 Sharks fascinate me so I was pretty excited about Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. But when I watched their inaugural program, Oceans of Fear, I couldn’t help but wonder … Continue reading

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows

It’s been waited for expectantly all year long, ever since the date was announced back at the first of the year that the seventh and final Harry Potter book would be released on July 21st. I meant to get this review written and posted on Monday and for those of you, who might have been waiting, please accept my apologies. I received my copy at about 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 21st and I didn’t get to sit down and read it until about 12. I finished the book around 7:30 pm. It is 759 pages – but it’s ten … Continue reading

The Let’s Talk Blog Top Ten – Reasons for a Homebirth

In my opinion, there are way too many reasons to count. However, they can all more or less be included in these TEN reasons to have a homebirth: TEN: Feel safe – Being without fear is the #1 key to having a successful, drug-free delivery. I personally would be scared to death of a hospital birth, while some women may be scared to be without the medical umbrella of a hospital. NINE: Have it your way – When giving birth at a hospital, it’s hard not to let our doctors or midwives run the show. After all, you may be … Continue reading
